Worship Service

When all without is harsh and cruel and brash,
An ever-hurried, coarse, chaotic world,
Inhabitants into confusion hurled,
Their lives begun and ended in a flash;
When all within is calm and quiet and still
The eye of that great hurricane around,
Where prayers and songs rise up with reverent sound,
And nobody wishes another ill;
What matter then, if with my voice and heart,
I aim to serve a different god than they?
This place is holy, and we will be heard
By any divine power to which we pray.
Gathered here in love, Christians and heathen,
Our voices, intermingled, fly to heaven.
