One Thousand Miles from Here
By: Cheyenne Taylor Age: 12 Issued: June 3, 2003

What would happen to me

If I decided to run

What would happen to you

If I disappeared from the sun

Well I did

I ran into the ocean

I slid under the waves

The salt blew through my lungs

The fish cast shadows against my ankles

And the moon reflected my eyes

I knew that you came looking

But I decided to hide

I lay inside myself for hours

Until eventually I was lost

Swallowed up in ghosts

Of things I used to be

It's amazing how many secrets

A single place can hold

I'm surprised I haven't burst

This is almost scary

All this serenity

But I'm handling it quite well

I've got myself and that's all I'll ever need

Come and find me please

I'm only one thousand miles from here

My soul is sleeping

But my body is awake

I hope you'll come soon

I made a big mistake

The waves are glassy

Seagulls are passing

It's all so peaceful here

I play among the dolphins

I talk to the birds

No one is listening

But I don't give

And amongst my serenity

I remember our wedding day

I want to find that again

So please hear my prayers

What have I done?

It's amazing how many secrets

A single place can hold

I'm surprised I haven't burst

This is almost scary

All this serenity

But I'm handling it quite well

I've got myself and that's all I'll ever need

Come and find me please

I'm only one thousand miles from here

Oh I can picture you

But those photographs are fading

Lost inside my mind

Where I don't think I can find them

I know I said I only need myself

But I need you too

Just to be loved

It's amazing how many secrets

A single place can hold

I'm surprised I haven't burst

This is almost scary

All this serenity

But I'm handling it quite well

I've got myself and that's all I'll ever need

Come and find me please

I'm only one thousand miles from here
