The Day the Sky Broke by the Lady Arianrod.

I remember the day that the sky broke.

The air was heavy and at the cloudy unfurling of the dawn, there seemed no hope for me to see the descent of the sun.

I was wrong, however, and continued on with my day. My head was bent and my eyes were droopy and glazed as I studied the sidewalk patterns on my walk to school. I quickly recited the rules for finding a derivative of a parametric equation... or whatever they're called.... as I watched the sky.

Gray clouds and tiny cloud-patches of purest white drifted across the murky expanse of sky. The sun gloated behind its curtain, lounging on the other end of the universe while I longed for its light.

"I guess that the sun isn't coming today," I murmured as the solid structure of my school appeared in front of me. Various students, most likely freshmen, milled about the side doors, talking about when they would be old enough to drive and how they tried to sneak a cigarette or two over the weekend.

I couldn't help but smile. Was I like that a mere two years ago? I'll probably never know, because time travel is still only a myth.

It's 7:32. I walked down the green and yellow hallway that I so often traversed for the past 175 days. Thirteen minutes until school begins. I sit down at my desk in homeroom, paying no attention to the boy and girl that are deeply involved in "studying" with their faces next to each other and their hands "exploring".

Eh, so the day is like any other. But I wish it was sunny.

Why did the sun leave us down here, beneath the mediocre canopy of grayness? How long would it be until the sun would enter the streets of its city again and glow with joy over its rejoicing subjects?

Who knew. Maybe it would rain for the next three days while the sun took an extra vacation to see its lover in the neighboring galaxy. The weather always seemed to be like that, 3 days of rain and ten minutes of sunlight.

The sunlight usually came just before dusk. Damn that sun.

The day rolled by like molasses in a slow-mo replay. Ecology, gym, math.... then the math test which I barely studied for, then the monotonous hallway again.....

I approached the side doors, nonchalantly throwing them open to see....

Sunlight!

The sky had broken and sunlight cascaded to the ground in golden, whispering tendrils of light.

Maybe I underestimated the sun, but we'll still have three consecutive days of rain in the same intermittent pattern until August.

End.
