The Perfect Family

Chapter Four: Evelyn Grant

About thirty minutes after Ryan left the house, his real uncle called. Lana answered the phone.

"Hello?"

"Lana? This is your brother. I'm sorry but I won't be able to make dinner with Ryan tonight. My girlfriend and I have been fighting and I think we're going to make it up. I hope I didn't spoil any plans you made. Listen, I've got to go. She just got here. Goodbye, little sister." With that, he hastily hung up.

Lana stool there, mouth wide open, holding the phone which now held a dial tone. Silent tears streamed down her face. Her husband noticed her staring off into space, crying. He got up from his chair and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.

"Lana? What's wrong dear?"

Lana searched for words, lost in a spiral of confusion, distress, and anger. "Ryan. That was not my brother who picked him up. He just called to cancel." After mumbling these things, she broke down, bawling into her husband's chest.

Andrew stood there in a state of shock. He couldn't imagine who would do such an awful thing. What did this madman want with his son? Andrew made a promise -for him, his wife, and most importantly, Ryan- to find this creep and bring him to justice.

Daniel had decided to start his search for his "daughter". He looked through local newspapers, but could not find her. He turned on the television, hoping to find someone. There were the usual stories, like the weather report. But one story caught his attention. The local high school's graduation was last night. It had been videotaped, and could be bought at the school. Daniel noted this in his mind as the perfect way to find what he was looking for.

After a while, he got dressed and went to town. He stopped at the grocery store, and the post office, just like a normal citizen would have. He also made a pit stop at the high school. He put on his fatherly face and purchased a graduation tape. He got back in his truck and drove home.

Upon arriving, he put the groceries up, and popped the tape into the VCR. He watched the principal announce each student's name, and handing him or her their diploma. He watched as they made their way through the alphabet. He muttered various things as he occasionally froze on different girls. He thought he saw her when the principal reached the "D"s, but it wasn't her. He continued to watch, eyes never leaving the screen. When the principal was in the "G"s, he tensed up. He froze the screen on a young girl, who had brown, curly hair. Once again, the evil grin spread across his face as he grabbed the phone book, looking up the listing for "Grant".

He didn't have a plan yet, so he decided to use the phone tap again, as it proved very valuable last time. He dressed in his blue jumpsuit yet again, grabbed the tap, and jumped in his van.

When he arrived at the Grant home, he went right up to the door, as if he did this every day. He rang the doorbell, which chimed a beautiful melody. A girl, with red hair and blue eyes answered the door.

"Hello. How may I help you?"

Daniel had a quizzical look on his face. "This is the Grant residence, correct?" he nervously said as he fumbled with his zipper. 'This is not her! It has to be the wrong house' he thought.

The girl smacked her gum loudly. "Yep, this sure is. Who are you?"

He cursed himself inside. "Well, Miss Grant." The girl cut him short.

"I'm not Miss Grant. I'm her best friend. Sorry for the mix-up."

Daniel let out a sigh of relief. "It's no trouble. I'm the telephone repairman. I am going through my area doing a routine check. Do you mind if I come in and do so? I have lots of other houses to check."

The girl shook her head, "No problem. Come on in." She moved aside, and blew a bubble with her gum.

He walked over to a phone and pretended to look at the wires. "So, where is everyone that lives here?" When she wasn't looking, he placed the tap on the phone.

"Oh, Mr. And Mrs. Grant are away on a business trip in Japan, and Eve is upstairs doing who knows what."

Daniel hid his smile. 'Eve, such a nice name.' He told himself. He stood up and put the phone back where it belonged. "Well, everything seems to be in order. If anything happens, call us at the phone company. Good day." He said as he walked out of the room.

Once he was outside, he quickly rushed back to his van, got in, and headed home. Twenty minutes later, he pulled into his driveway and strolled into his house. He turned the tap on, to see if he could learn anything. After waiting for two hours, and going through three sandwiches, he finally heard voices.

"Hey baby" said a male voice.

"Oh hi Ty. Where are we going tonight on our anniversary? You did remember, didn't you?" she sounded worried that he might have forgotten.

He laughed, "Of course not, sweetie. I will meet you at the restaurant at 7:30, ok? I have to go now I love you" he made a kissy noise that made Eve giggle and Daniel gag. 'How repulsive' he thought as they both hung up. As soon as he turned the tap off, a plan formulated in his head. He changed into some normal clothes, and headed back outside for his truck. He sped off back in the direction of the Grant home. He grinned, and sang along, slightly off-key, to the radio all the way.

Later that night Evelyn Grant looked in the mirror in the bathroom once more. She straightened the straps on her fiery red dress, which reached just above her knees. She picked up a can of hairspray and sprayed some on her light brown hair, which was piled on top of her head, with small curls cascading down. She gazed one last time into her own green eyes, smiled, and took her purse with her downstairs to find her red high heels. Tonight was a very special night for her and her boyfriend; they would be celebrating their two-year anniversary at their favorite Italian restaurant in town.

Once completely finished getting ready, Eve grabbed her purse and walked out the door of her home. She got in her car and headed to the restaurant.

When she arrived, a valet parked her car for her. She wandered in, looking around. The restaurant was dark; each table held a candle that lit the room with a soft, dim light. She spotted Tyler sitting at a table near the window. She walked over to him; he stood up and presented her with a bouquet of roses while giving her a kiss. He pulled her chair out for her, and resumed his own position across from her. They ordered, and talked about what had happened that day, until their food came.

Once they had finished eating, Tyler smiled a large grin at Eve. He stood up from his chair, and got down on one knee. He took her hand in his, and pulled out a small velvet box containing a diamond engagement ring.

Eve gasped, and looked at Tyler with wide eyes.

Tyler leaned in close, and held her hand tightly. "Evelyn Grant, will you marry me?"

The tears that threatened to spill at any moment did, as she replied with a soft "yes", as she was in shock. Tyler grinned, slipped the ring on her finger, and kissed it. He stood up to find the whole restaurant cheering. All except one man, who sat unnoticed in the corner. He sipped on his wine, staring intently at the young couple. 'And now the fun begins' he thought to himself.

After a while, the couple left the restaurant, hand in hand. Tyler stopped at her car and gazed deeply into her eyes. "I love you, Eve."

Eve smiled "I love you too, Ty." She leaned in as he bent down, and they shared a romantic kiss in the moonlight. Once they broke, they said their goodbyes. She promised to call him in the morning so they could discuss wedding plans. She waved as Tyler drove off into he distance. She jumped into her own car, and headed for home. She was so happy, she didn't notice the truck following her.
