"Thanks," Laura answered contemptuously. Megan, of course, looked perfect- not one long blonde hair was out of place, and her piercing blue eyes sparkled merrily under her glasses. Her conservative clothes hung nicely on her tall frame, and she said, in her dry and cynical voice under laced with mirth, "Glad I could help."
Laura rolled her eyes, and searched the crowd before her for Emily. She finally spotted her, frowning as usual, next to a group of her other friends, the "punks" of the school. Emily's posture, which always spoke of bored indifference, was no different from usual. Her shoulder length red- brown hair and brown eyes looked uninterested and jaded. She spotted Laura and Megan and abruptly stopped talking. Turning her back on the skaters behind her, she made her way to the table.
"Hey," she said conversationally as she sat down in the chair on the other side of Laura.
"Hey," Laura answered. Megan didn't say anything.
"So, I was thinking," Emily continued. "We need to apologize to Mr. Simmons. I mean, science is like a living hell nowadays! We don't get to pass notes, and he keeps glaring at us. It's no fun anymore.
Megan and Laura nodded in agreement, not bothering to actually answer.
They sat there like that, greeting the people they knew that walked by, ignoring the rest. When the bell rang, they made their way up the stairs, to their lockers. As she slammed hers shut, Laura nudged Megan and inclined her head to Mr. Simmons, who was walking into his classroom across the hall. They exchanged unspoken words, and turned to Emily. She too, seemed to know what they "said" And without a word, the three of them strode into Mr. Simmons classroom.
Mr. Simmons looked up when they came in, then swiftly ignored them and returned to his paperwork. Laura and Emily exchanged glances. This did not bode well. Taking a deep breath, Laura walked forward to Mr. Simmons desk, and said, "Mr. Simmons, we are so sorry. We really take you for granted, and we shouldn't have written what we did."
"You're right, you shouldn't have," Mr. Simmons replied.
Laura sighed and looked to Megan and Emily for help. Megan jumped in. "Yeah, we are really sorry. I shouldn't have written that. We just sometimes...forget. You know?" Megan flailed hopelessly. Catching Emily's eye, she gestured desperately for her to take over.
Emily stepped up without a word and said, "What she means to say, is that we are terribly sorry, and hope you can forgive us. If you can't, that's okay too. We know we were wrong, and we are serving a punishment already. Umm...that's all we can say." With that, the three turned and started to walk from the room. They were almost out the door when Mr. Simmons called them back in. "Girls?" they turned. "Thank you."
Emily, Megan, and Laura smiled and left the room.
Later that day, Megan and Laura walked to science. They were almost to the door, when Emily stormed past them, wrenched open her locker, got what she needed and smashed it shut. She was scowling and cussing under her breath. She brushed past them and slammed down into her seat. Apparently forgetting about the note-banning rule, she yanked open the Surf Bored Book and scribbled in it furiously. Laura and Megan exchanged glances and sat down in their seats.
A moment later, the notebook came flying by Laura's ear. She ducked, lest any more projectiles attacked her, and quietly read the note Emily had written.
Can you BELIEVE what that fudging butt hole did?? That EVIL CONNIVING WITCH flunked me!! FLUNKED ME!! I GOT A FIFTY FIVE IN HISTORY!! -Kalifornia
Except she didn't say fudging. Or witch or butt hole.
Laura wrote a quick note saying she was sorry and they'd talk at lunch. She'd definitely learned her lesson about note passing, and she didn't want any more days added to the week and a half she still had of detention.
A/N: Yeah, I am tired of writing. This chapter majorly sucked, didn't it? I've got bad writer's block.:rubs temples: I need an aspirin! They should make an aspirin for writer's block, dontcha think?
