A kitchen toy set. I looked at the other shelf and saw some make-up toy set. I continued to walk on the other aisle and saw some teddy bears, and numerous stuff toys. I sighed cursing this huge toy shop. So big, yet I haven’t decided anything to give to my sister on her birthday.
What? What? What? I continued to ask myself while my hand was glued to my hip and my forehead was crumpled. For the last time, I rounded another aisle which had dolls. My mind quickly disagreed. There’s no way in earth my sister would play with dolls! For some abnormal reason, she hates them!
Then, I heard a voice.
“Have you heard the news? Some people died from the landslide in the dumpsite”. Someone asked.
“Yeah. How I pity them”. Another answered back.
I shrugged my shoulders off. Who told them to dig up trash anyway? I was about to leave that part of the toy store which had about 3 or 5 people when I saw a boy with a blue cap on his head. Rather shabby, but still was decent looking. From his small frame, I could tell he was about 5 or 6 years old. His eyes were fixed on a baby doll, the size of a newborn with a summery pink floral dress, blonde curly hair and blue-gray eyes.
I don’t why, but, scants of second later, I just found myself asking him why he was staring at the doll.
He looked at me with his hazel-nut eyes and then answered me with his meek, childish voice. “My older sister liked this doll.”
Liked? I asked to myself. Before I could give my musings more thought, I heard his voice again.
“She wanted this doll before but Grandma said it was too expensive and we didn’t have enough money”.
I raised a brow and then moved closer to the doll and lifted its tag price. Two dollars! You call this expensive? Duh! A complete Barbie doll set could cost me over 100 dollars, and you call this doll expensive? Those words rang through my mind.
“Grandma said Papa and Mama can see her. She went somewhere—well, that’s what they told me…Grandma said Mama and Papa are going to visit her, that’s why, I want them to give this to my sister to make her happy and let her know how much I miss her…” the boy’s eyes were full of innocence and a little brother’s love for his sister. He continued to stare at the doll.
It couldn’t be… I thought dimly. My eyes were knitted and the next thing I know, I was at the counter with the boy. I gave the cashier a hundred peso and told her to put the box in a paper bag. I handed the paper bag down to him which he accepted almost dumbfounded, eyes questioning.
"What’s your name?" I asked him.
He held the box in his petite hands. It seemed to me he was still mesmerized by the fact that he was now holding the doll his sister had longed for.
"Hello? Earth to boy! What’s your name, and who are you with? I was surprised by my own question." Why didn’t I ask him that earlier? He couldn’t possibly be here alone!
He looked up at me again with those hazel-nut orbs. He bowed his head low and then looked at me again. This time his eyes seemed to sparkle with happiness
“It’s Jino…”
"I see. So, Jino, tell me, who are you with?" I asked him.
“My uncle works here. He cleans the place.” He proudly replied.
I nodded my head. I decided to go and gestured to leave when Jino tugged at my arm. I looked back at him.
“Thank you…” Jino said timidly. I know, from that submissive voice, he was happy…
Me too…I was somewhat happy…I really don’t know why…Come to think of it, I forgot to buy something for my sister. Oh well! I’ll just get her a shirt or something.
I smiled back at him. "You’re welcome!" I returned pinching his nose. He smiled back and then I left him.

I arrived at home. No one was there yet. My feet led me to the porch. I always loved this part of the house. It led to the garden and the atmosphere was really soothing. I sat on one of the wooden chairs. I closed my eyes and my mind delved into what happened earlier. I kept wondering what happened to Jino’s sister. Is she sick and in a hospital? Is she living with other relatives? I sighed. Slowly opening my eyes, I caught sight of a newspaper which was half open. I took it. The date was yesterday. I scanned through the pages for any interesting article. But then, suddenly, a picture trapped my attention. I looked closer. It was…it was…it was Jino! He was hugging someone, preferably his grandma. I read the article as fast as I can. And then I found out…Five days ago, his sister died from cholera…Yesterday, his parents died…
They got trapped in tons of garbage…
