Unexpected
By: Jasmyne
Chapter Two
“A little help here,” Jesimae’s back slammed against the open door.
“Why did I agree to this?” Gabriel miserably asked himself, helping her lift the box.
“Watch out, Tiger. My personal items are in there,” she walked over the lounge chair, putting up her feet.
Gabriel shook his head, “I’m having some friends over tonight so I need you to stay up here.”
“You are WAY too pushy, Tiger.” She said matter of factly.
Gabriel stopped and held out his hand. “Seriously. Don’t come down tonight. Deal?”
Jesimae thought for a second. Like that’s gonna happen. She stood up and shook his hand, while the other hand behind her back, crossing her fingers. “Deal.”
RINGGGGGGGGG
“That’s the doorbell,” Gabriel walked over to the door and opened. Pete stood in the doorway. “Yes?”
Pete looked like he was amused. “Is Jesimae here?”
Gabriel looked at him suspiciously, narrowing his eyes.
“I’m her boyfriend,” He added.
Gabriel smiled slyly. “Boyfriend? Aren’t you a little too old?” Thinking he caught him.
“Not really. Can I please talk to Jesimae now?” He looked bored.
Gabriel sighed very loudly and shouted, “Jesimae! I’d appreciate no unexpected visits from boyfriends!”
“Boyfriend?” She asked. “I don’t have a boyfr – Marty!”
“Marty?” Gabriel laughed at the name.
“We’ll be back in a couple of minutes,” she took Pete’s arm and walked out of the apartments building with him, into the streets.
“What’s up, Marty?” She asked, playfully.
“I found out some information I want you to check out. I have some details but I’ll update you later on tonight.”
“Don’t keep me in suspense here, Marty. What is this new piece of information?”
Pete stopped at a hotdog vendor and paid him for two hotdogs. They walked along the boardwalk.
“Well, I found out who Gabriel’s enemy is. His name is Steve Anderson. They are competitors. Some of my inside sources say that he’s coming into town tonight. I have a feeling something bad is going to happen.” Pete stated, glancing around, making sure no one was around.
“Ah, so that’s why there is a meeting tonight,” she remembered.
“There’s a meeting tonight? That’s good. Those things last practically all night so you have all tonight to get yourself reacquainted with Steve.”
“Oh yeah? How do you know these things?” She glanced sideways at him, smiling.
He laughed. “You’ll find out sooner or later. Now, you have to get to know this Steve guy, as MORE than a friend. Okay?”
“Oh, God. Knowing my luck he’s going to end up being a real jerk. So why do I have to get to know Steve? I thought I was supposed to get to know Gabriel?”
Pete nodded. “Well, there are two reasons. One, the closer you get to Steve the more you find out about this messy business on both sides. Reason two, is that it would be like killing two birds with one stone.”
Jesimae threw her uneaten hotdog in a trash can. “Got it.”
“I’ll call you tonight around eleven o’clock. These things usually start around ten o’clock. Oh, and be sure to bring a recorder just in case they let something slip.”
“No problem. Talk to you tonight.”
“When I first saw Gabriel I knew you two would become great friends. He seems kinda… Neanderthal. You’re favorite type.” Pete interrupted, amused.
Jesimae rolled her eyes and smiled.
************
She heard them. They were walked in at around 10 o’clock.
She heard one of them ask, “Where’s the chick?”
And she heard Gabriel reply. “She’s staying up here.”
Chick?!?!?!She thought raising her eyebrows, unpacking and then folding her shirts and skirts. Looks like I need to go and take a little visit to the mini bar downstairs.
At around 10:30 p.m. she decided it was time to stop watching reruns of The Cosby Show and go downstairs to check it out. She went over to a box with the word “FRAGILE” on it in big black marker.
She opened the box and took out a little tape recorder. She hooked it around the top rim of her jeans and sealed the box back up. Containing numerous items she’ll need in the future. Including her pistol.
She very quietly walked through the living room and kitchen. Then she opened the door and stepped down, turning the tape recorder on. She crouched down on one of the higher steps and listened.
All of the men were sitting on the circle couch.
“What should we do about Steve? He’s coming back tonight I think,” a man with brown hair and blond highlights remarked.
“That’s why we’re going to wait a couple of days. It would be too obvious if we get him tonight.” Gabriel replied.
A blond man said, “What are we going to do about him?”
Gabriel shrugged. “You guess.”
Ohhhhh this is getting better than Jerry Springer. She thought. I think it’s time to break this up.
“Hello!” She walked down the stairs, smiling cheerfully.
“Jesimae! I told you to stay upstairs!” Gabriel yelled.
“Oops, my bad.” She walked over to the mini bar and opened it, pretending to be searching for a certain kind of alcohol.
A man with dark brown hair laughed. “Aren’t you going to introduce us?”
“Yeah, Gabriel, God.” She smiled at the frustrated Gabriel.
Gabriel sighed, very annoyed. “Jesimae, this Jim. Ben is over there, the one with the black hair. Jan (A/N: Pronounced “Yawn”) is the one with the blonde hair. And Adam is the one with the brown hair and blonde highlights. And over there is,” he pointed, “Matt, Jake, Aaron, Kyle, Matt B, Evan, AJ, Scott, Mark, Rob, Sean, Garret, Trevor, Paul, Ed, Dan, Brian, Bobby, and Andrew.”
“Hello, I’m Jesimae. Gabriel’s new roommate.” She pinched his cheeks.
“Yeah Yeah Yeah,” he took her arm and forced her up the stairs, “you are incredibly annoying do you know that?” they stopped at the top of the stairs.
RINGGGGGGGG
“That’s for me!” she shouted and dashed for the phone. “Hello Marty.” She answered the phone.
“Hold on a sec,” she covered the phone and said, “You can leave now, Tiger.”
Gabriel stomped away.
“Alright, what’s up? Are you sure this is safe?”
Pete answered. “Yes, he has no reason to suspect you. Ok, meet me at Jerome’s Pizza Place in an hour. Bye.”
