Musings

Summary: This is just some stuff I wrote a few days ago when I was feeling bad. It's amazing what depression and a hurt heart can do to my writing ability . . . as well as what can be coughed out of my brain and fingers.

Author's Notes: Before I forget, //~// and [~] is used when people are thinking or saying something in their minds.

Chapter Title: Some Other Time

~ Some Other Time ~

I stopped in front of you, hands thrust deep into my coat pockets against the cold. My face was half covered by the thick, tartan scarf you bought me all those years ago, smothering my mouth against speech. Neither of us spoke, but I could tell just what you were thinking.

//You're back again//

[Yeah, I'm back.]

I continued to look at you wordlessly, not trusting myself to speak. There were questions I wanted to ask you, but it was probably too late now. We had drifted apart and had become too distant for talking. This was no longer a time for mere words to be passed between the two of us.

//Why have you come back?//

[I came back to see you, to talk, but it's too late.]

//Yeah, it's too late now//

Taking my hand out of my pocket, I produced the object I left you for, all those years ago. It hung from my fingers, glinting silently in the early morning light. After a few more moments, I laid the object at your feet. When I straightened, I thrust my hand back into the pocket and watched you, knowing that you wouldn't pick it up from the ground.

//What's this?//

[A gift. I came back to give it to you, but it's too late.]

//Thank you anyway//

[You're welcome.]

I turned on my heel and started to walk away. You didn't follow, only remained behind after our silent confrontation. Not a word had passed in the moments we had been face to face. My eyes drifted closed and my lips moved in silent prayer to you. The silence closed in again and I savoured it as I made my way from the sacred area you rested. It may have been too late to talk, but we had always had our ways.

//I'll see you some other time then?//

I turned and smiled at your silent grave.

[Yeah, some other time.]
