AS THE YEARS PASSED AFTER THE COMING OF THE SACRED ONES THE RANGES
GREW FORMIDABLY QUIET. THE PEACEFUL WAYS RETURNED TO THE VALLEYS OF THE
RANGES .THE SEASONS CAME AND WENT AS USUAL AND SPRING BROUGHT NEW LIFE TO
THE RANGES AND NEW HOPE TO THOSE WHO SOUGHT TO DEFEND IT.
BUT THIS IS NOT A STORY OF LIFE IN THE EVER CHANGING RANGES BUT OF
DEATH IN A KINGDOM FAR AWAY. ACROSS THE VALLEY OF FORGOTTEN AGES, DOWN
THROUGH THE BLOOD LINES OF GENERATIONS PASSED TO A CAVE IN AN UNFORGIVING
WORLD OF SYLLWIONS, DYMAMMIDS, FOLDSWNS, AND THE LUSTROUS BLOOD THIRSTY
SSYJWNS.
THIS IS THE TALE OF A BREED BELIEVED TO BE EXTINCT
AND THE TRIALS OF THE VERY LAST CHILD BORN INTO SUCH A HATEFUL WORLD.
I
THE scent of decay tainted the air. Driven mad with hunger I stooped to
the act of digging for food. The moist putrid smell of dirt sickened me
,but I kept on,not even knowing what food may lay beneath the surface of
the earth .Weakened by thirst I could barely see what lay before me .I was
tired, ever so tired , but then again the aroma of rot and decay woffed up
from the pit and with a last burst of energy I was able to lock my jaws
around the mud covered chunk of meat that had lain hidden since the last
migration of Dymammids roughly two years prior.
Dizzy with hunger I began to gorge myself ,when a noise from my long dead
meal startled me . At first I thought I was imagining but then again came a
sharp yelp from the cavity I had dug . Stealthily I drew back gripping my
prize in my jaws. Some how I managed to drag my meal out of the depression
it had lain in for so long and stuffed it bit by bit into my withered old
sack. As I safe guarded my prize the wind stirred the underbrush around me
,and the most delicious scent floated up from the pit and hovered above my
head only to be replaced by another. My stomach ached in anticipation
something that smelled so good must surely taste that way.
A slight shift in shadow caught my eyes, I tensed ready to pounce the
wonderful scent enchanting me. Another movement, screech like cries ,a loud
hiss .I pivoted my self and peered cautiously into the cavity, shadowed
darkness met my eyes. Shades of blacks and browns swirled with in the pit
infused with the enticing scent. Once again the wind stirred sending brown
clouds of dust into my eyes. Choking ,eyes burning, I leaned even further
forward for a better look. A flash of cold silver sliced the darkness,
horrified I reared to run. As the last of the dust settled around me I
realized I hadn't moved a muscle. From deep with in the cavity the largest
most beautiful eyes had appeared and watched me with deft interest .Once
again streaks of silver shot towards me, the clawed arms wavered in the
darkness.
Once again the urge to run was stifled by the luminous eyes which held me
transfixed. The sweet pungent scent wafted upwards again , the creature
blinked at me longingly. Then a scream from above sent cold shivers up my
spine.
The shadow of the giant darkened the forest. It to had been driven crazy by
hunger delusional by thirst. Attracted by the maddening scent emanating
from the being before me ,the colossal Ssywjn screamed once more and dove
repeatedly into the canopy sending huge masses of branches crashing down
around me. Terrified I pictured the beast its five -inch long teeth slicing
through me, its thick neck muscles working its massive spring hinged jaws
as it shred me to bits. I pictured myself being carried off into the
blinding sunlight with in the Ssywjns mouth its skeletal wings working
furiously to keep us aloft. I shuddered at the thought and once more turned
my attention to the seemingly harmless being before me .Carefully,
cautiously I reached into the hole feeling around for the beings arms I
pulled it up, urged it onto its shaky legs. In a mad rush I dragged it
tottering along behind me I dodged and weaved in and out between trees and
falling branches as we ran for cover. Looking back at the entity now
being dragged unresisting behind me, I realized it was just a cub ,a kit .
Its large eyes flashing it ran stumbling on its short weak legs. The sound
of the beast echoed through out the forest as it tried unsuccessfully to
break through the canopy. Slowing to a walk I released the kits hand and
let it hold me as I guided it into a shallow den which I'd located the
night before ,there I fully examined the strange new being .
This strange creature was in fact just a cub, of what species I was
unsure .It had the look of something new, freshly birthed ,its cord was
still attached and swinging loosely from its swollen belly. On close
inspection I realized that its large ravishing eyes were covered with a
thin transparent membrane giving the illusion of a slight flash. As I
studied it,it studied me , watching my every move not letting me out of
sight .It was quite large for a new born cub ,more than half my size except
for its full round belly which put mine to shame. Over and over I turned it
but still no indication of whether it was male or female
In conclusion I figured its mother had birthed it and left the
poor thing to find some food for herself. Knowing she wouldn't be back for
a while, she decided to hide her sweet smelling kid under a nicely
decomposed carcass to cover its intoxicating aroma. After that thought I
glanced worriedly around. Wondering if the mother was some where enraged at
not finding her child tracking me down bloodthirstily.
I also decided that if the mother didn't show up by nightfall I would
leave and try to get as far away from the starving ssyjwn as fast as could.
