Summer!!! What a beautiful word, except for that one girl in first grade who. oh never mind. I can't believe that school is over! This was definitely one of the best years ever! I'm really going to miss everybody, even the teachers. Oh, photo op! "Hey Alex, wait for me!"
This is how the start of the summer looked to Liv Reed; a way out of school, and more time to spend with friends. Utter freedom. Unfortunately, that's not exactly the plan summer had in store for her.
Wow, what a great year this has been, I still can't believe its over. All the fun Alex and Sam and I have had shouldn't be allowed in school! I'm definitely gonna miss everyone, but then again, with summer here, I'll be able to see them whenever I want to. Ah, the last bus ride, this should be worthwhile.
"Hey Dad, what's up?"
"Oh nothing. How was your last day?"
"Terrific. I still can't believe it's over. It was a hard, but definitely fun, year."
"Oh, that's great. I have to use the computer now, okay?"
"Yeah, sure." A few moments later. "Hi, is Alex there?"
"No, I'm afraid she's not, but I'll tell her to call you back Liv."
"Thanks Mrs. Thomas." Where the heck is Alex? We barely even had a half-day today, and yet she's not home. Funky chicken. Oh well, guess I'll call Sam.
"Oh, she's not home? Thanks Mrs. Graham." Hmm, funny. Both of my best friends aren't home? ON THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! Where in the world could they be? I really hope they're not at Shank's. (Shank's was the local music store) I hate when they go and do things together and leave me out of it, it's not fair at all. Oh well, I guess I can go walk the dog or something.
I took Paulie outside, and decided that a good jog might help kick up my spirits, which were pretty darn low. So, as I was jogging down Treebark Road, with The Starting Line blasting on my headphones, I totally didn't see Mack coming to get his mail. *Bang*
"Oops. Sorry 'bout that Mack, guess I wasn't looking where I was going."
"Oh, that's okay. I felt like a bit of a sit-down. So, what are you listening to?"
That was when I realized that the music was still blasting, and that I was screaming at Mack instead of talking to him. "Oh, sorry. The Starting Line, have you heard of them? They're outta Philly."
"Yeah, I've heard their one song. Can I have a listen?"
"Sure, guess I owe you that at least." After that, Mack and I finished walking of dog, as we continued the circle around Treebark Road, and up onto Wedgwood Drive. He was a great walking partner, he talked, and best of all, he listened. Since he went to private school, he was still in school for another week, but he said he didn't mind it because he "sleeps through all classes." I asked him if he slept through lunch, and surprisingly, he said yes.
But, maybe I shouldn't have been that surprised. Now that I look back at the things Alex, Sam, and I have done, sleeping through lunch really isn't such a big deal. I still remember all the looks we get in the mall; the sporty athletic blonde (Sam), walking with the curly-haired energetic brunette (Alex), with who comes the nothing-quite-so-special- about-her girl with the dark hair. (That last one was me, in case you were wondering.) I guess you could call me the conservative one, because if you took me to the mall, don't plan on buying much, unless its on super sale, or food. Food is always okay by me. The thing that surprises me most about our friendship is not the way we look when we go to the mall, but the fact that we've been together for, just about forever. Back in kindergarten, Alex had been the only one who would sit with me at lunch. (She brought the best food to trade throughout school, so we always got evil looks from everyone else.) And Sam fit right in when she moved here to Shimmstown, PA, in the second grade. It was like we were the Three Musketeers or something.
