I am dolphin. A merman. Different. No sea creature has the uniqueness as a Merfolk has in a single strand of hair. No human can poses the beauty of our glistening fins. And no God can match our voice of bells. Not eve Vienna, the goddess who created us.
We live deep in the vast of the ocean, and only know the outside world from the stories, Contin, our shark, tells us. I laugh now. Contin tells us of a humans fear of Shark. Why fear something that feels no anger, fear or vengeance towards you?
Contin tells us that humans are stupid creature. That they have small thoughts with large egos. I flush with anger when he tells us that. Stupid shark; to say such things about humans to Merfolk is highly disrespectful. Human is the closest relative us Merfolk have. Sadly, though, very few of us ever come to see one.
A Merfolk is only allowed to see the outer surface, as we call it, but once in their life. When the moon is out, upon our seventeenth year, only then may we swim upwards. Tonight, we prepare Sianna (my older, wiser and only sibling) to go to the outer surface. She squeals with delight as we dress her in starfish, crab shells, and pearls.
Contin waits to lead her to the outer surface, her eyes are huge with pride/ Our hearts stop, we dare not breathe, as Athina (our mother) announces with much love, that Sianna is ready. We watch with proud eyes and jealous hearts as Contin leads her to the outer surface. Athina leads us deeper into the depths of our ocean.
