An Eternity Worth Living
Chapter Two
Last time...
"Have you fed already?" I asked, removing my weight from the railing.
He followed my example, standing straight as he replied, "I haven't planned anything at all. In fact I think I'd have fun spending an evening with someone who isn't a potential meal!" He laughed slightly, a kind sounding laugh seemingly unaffected by all he had inevitably seen through his years. I on the other hand hardly even remembered how to smile now. "And we of 'tainted blood'," sarcasm laced his words I noted, "only have to feed once every two weeks, not as much as you."
I didn't take the time to reply and instead chose to simply begin walking to a vampiric bar that I knew was close by. I didn't even have to look behind me to know that Vincent was following.
This time...
We reached the bar fairly quickly seeing as there was no one who approached us; well no one who approached me I should say. Though our way there was hindered slightly when some young girl approached Vincent, seeming to know him...
Since their conversation was short I shall recite it for you:
(backtracking about an hour...)
Vincent; now walking alongside me rather than tagging along looked about ready to inquire where we were headed exactly when a young girl ran up to us; she seemed to have come from no where... an impressive accomplishment for a mortal.
She seemed no older than 16, possibly younger. I thought perhaps she'd approached us by mistake, after all it was very late and easy to mistake what people looked like.
"Vincey!" she called, latching onto Vincent's arm as she said so.
Well that ruled out the first possibility unless she had a friend named Vincent who didn't happen to be the one she'd just clung on to.
He looked mildly shocked, looking toward the leech-like creature (no pun intended) on his arm. Immediately his expression softened, and he ruffled the girl's hair. "Hey Millie [1], what are you doing up this late? Mom will kill you if she finds you're not in bed."
So... she must have been his sister... but she didn't seem to have any immortal blood in her. Wait... there was some, though it was underlying.. and definitely not of vampire origin. Demonic really... though she seemed so completely bubbly that I couldn't believe it to be true.
She pouted girlishly up at Vincent, "I should say the same about you Vincent!" she looked curiously over to me and then back to her brother, "Who's he?" she asked, pressing her forefingers against one another.
"Ah, his name is Luc... we're about to go somewhere right now--"
A dangerous look came over her fine features as she grabbed her brother's wrist; the one without the spiked bracelet, and dragged him a few steps away from where I was left; standing alone. I simply pulled out a small white package from the inside of my coat pocket, and from it a cigarette and I found my lighter soon afterward.
I only slightly noticed that 'Millie' gave the now-lit cigarette a look of distaste as if it were the most vile thing on the face of the planet before she talked in an even quieter tone with her sibling.
I finished the cigarette and threw the butt of it onto the gravel beneath my feet, crushing it into the ground. I was about to simply head to the bar myself seeing as Vincent and his sister were still in a heated discussion... I didn't like people who couldn't just say 'no' to someone.
I was about to leave when Vincent called out for me to wait, and he ran to where I was standing. His face slightly flushed; no doubt because of what he had discussed with Millie. "Sorry about that... she's a little overprotective."
I didn't ask questions and instead just beckoned for him to follow me; which he did willingly.
After that there were no strange people who randomly came up to us so we made it to the bar not too long after we started walking.
On the outside the building seemed plain, and that in itself was an understatement. After all it had to look as such because if it were anything else... well; it wouldn't be safe for us anymore. I opened the door and proceeded to head through yet another one, only at this one I was stopped by one of the 'night guards' as they called them. Even though I was a usual here they never failed to question who I was, the password, who I had with me, and so forth.
"Hey Luc," the guard called with a hint of a smile on his young face, well... of course everyone looked young. "It's been a while since I've last seen you-- last week I think when you were with that... girl from, where was it... Brazil or somewhere?"
"Peru." I responded.
Jacob; for that is his name, nodded, "Yes, from Peru what was her name?"
I smirked just the slightest bit, Jacob had always been a good friend of mine but he took things very literally... "That was her name."
He stared at me blankly before realizing what I was implying, "Oh! Ah, hehe, sorry. Thought you were saying that's where she was from... anyway-- password."
"Fluffy bunnies of death." I told him monotonously; obviously not many headhunters would figure that would be a password for a place such as this... so we used it.
"Right-o!" Jacob said happily as he opened the door for us.
As Vincent and I passed by, Jacob seemed to notice Vincent for the first time. He held out his arm to stop us from going inside, his eyes narrowed a bit and he gave me that sort of warning look. "Ah, Luc you know the rules..."
"Yes, I know the rules." I stated with a slight shrug of my shoulders; knowing what he was implying but not wanting it to be said aloud in front of the guest.
"It's for safety reasons, you know... it's not like I have problems with it--..."
"Don't worry Jacob," I reassured him, patting him on the shoulder, "he's with me... we won't cause any trouble."
Jacob looked unsure but nodded slightly, "If one fight breaks out... I swear you won't be able to come in here again."
Of course I knew Jacob was lying; I'd been in plenty of fights and the closest thing I'd come to being banned was when I was 'suspended' from the place. Vincent and I went along inside and immediately the harsh pounding of the music practically made my sensitive ears bleed.
As we made our way through the crowds on the dance floor heading to a table I reached behind me and grabbed Vincent's hand not wanting him to get lost... seeing as that would probably be dangerous for him.
We made it to an empty table; close to the bar-seats yet still secluded in its own small corner. Inside this club everything was dark, though on all the tables there were candles whose flames shone in a black florescent manner.
As I moved to sit down I realized that I was still holding Vincent's hand, I looked down at our interlocked fingers as did he and he quickly pulled his grasp from mine looking a little embarrassed. I saw his lips move, his gaze averted to the side.
"What was that?" I asked, speaking into his ear rather than trying to shout above the music.
He shied away from me, and shook his head as he sat down conveying that it didn't really matter. So I took my seat next to him and waited for the waiter or waitress to come and bring us our drinks.
Or at least my drink, seeing as I always ordered the same thing ... though they'd probably never seen Vincent in this place... he'd probably raise suspicions as well. I felt sick all of a sudden; I hadn't been thinking correctly in bringing Vincent into this place...
Soon enough the waitress came and handed me a tall glass of a thick, red liquid... it wasn't as good as the real thing but it was kept warm (or cold depending on how one liked it served-- I myself preferred warm) and was good enough for the time being.
The waitress looked at Vincent, with a smile plastered to her features; her fangs visible and looking somewhat glow-y in the black light. Her smile didn't waver but I could see her gaze change to something different, almost disgusted in what she saw before her.
She took down his order nonetheless though; and my eyes followed her as she walked towards the bar. I saw her lean over the table and begin speaking with some of the males there... no doubt about whom I brought. My suspicions were confirmed as a few of the males looked over to where we were sitting.
I stood from my chair, after taking a swig of my drink, and motioned for Vincent to rise. At his confused look I realized his ears were just beginning to become accustomed to the place-- and it seemed that after a while he would have started to enjoy himself had it not been for the small fact that we needed to leave. Now.
He stubbornly refused to get up so I grabbed him by the arm and pulled him out of his chair; though we'd wasted too much time and the men I'd seen talking with Patricia earlier approached us with superior looks on their faces.
"Lucas, Lucas, Lucas..." one of them tutted, shaking his head.
"I would've expected better from you, Luc." another said, as he motioned towards Vincent.
"You're not leaving so soon are you?" someone else spoke up seeming to have overheard the conversation since I hadn't the slightest clue who the girl was.
I took my sunglasses off, putting them in my trench coat pocket for safekeeping as I pulled the jacket off as well, throwing it onto the chair. I cracked my neck a bit, calm and composed seeing as these three posed no threat to me whatsoever... however they had insulted me and that simply couldn't go unpunished. Not to mention they were sort of blocking our way to the exit.
"You're looking a little more worn..." one of them noted, most likely referring to the hints of dark circles underneath my eyes, "Has this one been keeping you busy?" he scoffed, motioning towards Vincent.
I didn't justify that with an answer, and was about to taunt them to attack when the female spoke up, "Or is it because that wench you were with a while back finally left you for someone better?"
And of course at that comment I couldn't do anything but lash out-- not at her of course for I would never hit a woman who didn't strike me first. Instead I hit the first who had spoken and he went sprawling to the ground, two people who were dancing close by stumbled as well when he ran into them.
I knew what was to happen next but knowing didn't help me keep my balance much as someone came from behind and tackled me. Before I even had time to get out of the person's grasp the whole place seemed to be thrown into chaos. Everyone began turning on the other not sure why they were fighting or exactly what was going on. The only thing they knew was that the person next to them seemed suspicious, and that person down there as well. After a short while no one even seemed to care who started what or who attacked who first.
Vincent pulled me through the crowds and out the door, we both had blood stains on our clothing; none of our own blood I don't think though... see when vampires fight they go on a bit of a bite fest...
My leg seemed a little injured as well, so we left the building; Jacob having gone inside to try and sort things out between everyone; with Vincent supporting me. It was then that I noticed Vincent was shivering-- and that I'd left my trench coat and sunglasses back inside....
I looked to the building thinking my things were probably ripped apart by now anyway... I sighed heavily then looked down at the shaking one supporting me. "I'm s--" I was about to apologize when Vincent burst out laughing.
I blinked, I had thought... he would be angry with me to say the least; after all I knew what I had dragged him in to. I looked at him for an explanation waiting for his laughter to subside. I could only see the top of his head from where he buried his head into my shirt, hehe... the very beginning of his roots were blonde.
Finally he sighed loudly and pressed the back of his hand to his eyes effectively getting rid of the tears that had accumulated there. "That..." he inhaled, a grin upon his face, "That was probably the most fun I've had since..." he seemed to think about it for a while before snorting when he tried to withhold yet another fit of laughter, "...since a long time I'll tell you that much!"
I shook my head, "You..."
"...are very strange?" he asked; completing my sentence. He smiled, "Well, ah Luc... tonight was fun, but I think it's a little too close to dawn for you-- so you'd better head back to wherever you live now." There was a hint of sadness in his voice, but I figured it wasn't really too important at the moment.
I looked up to the sky; indeed he was right... the sky had lightened considerably but the sun had yet to peak over the mountains. Though it did irk me somewhat to be told by someone undoubtedly younger than I that it was passed my bedtime. "I'll see you again." I said with a curt nod in his direction before leaving him standing there to find his way back to wherever, though I walked slow enough to hear his response of:
"I'm sure you will."
And there was no sarcasm in his voice.
To be continued in Chapter Three...
In chapter three.... some years will probably have passed ^ ^; because I just think it'd be better then having them meet up the night after... y'know?
[1] I got the name Millie; not from Trigun...; but from Suikoden II since her looks are based off of her.
