Fairy Light

In the dark of the night
glows an ember of icy light.
Awakened by the moon's breath,
and nudging aside the ancient leaves,
she surveys the world.
A year has come and gone,
its echoes lingering on.
Autumn chill seeps in,
"Winter's nearly here" she cries
and the trees shiver in reply.
Fragile wings unfold,
as gracefully she leaps
dancing among the boughs.
Caressing the trunks,
she imprints her icy kiss.
Falling to the ground,
she inspects every leaf,
thoughtfully tracing each vein.
No crevice escapes her wild dance
and in her wake her footprints lie,
glistening frost in ethereal light.
The placid waters do not hinder her,
as she skips across the smooth mirror,
carving winter's mark.
Yet the frenzied dance draws to a halt
and the world holds its breath-
A swish of a hand,
and a roaring slience ensues,
as her companions tumble
from bruised skies,
pregnant with clouds.
Once again the world is clothed
in purity, soaked in light.
So her yearly task is done,
"Winter's come." she sighs
As pale wings withdraw.
And so she sinks to sleep,
her gift of winter for the world to keep.
