Her heart races
Her breath catches
Her knees buckle
She smooths her hair and checks her outfit
As he strides down the hall
With confident, easy steps
Amongst all the swooning girls
Falling at his feet
He gives a brilliant,
to die for smile
Certain of his most-wanted status
She heaves a sigh
Wishes she wasn't so invisible
To his eyes
Wishes he would finally
give her the time of the day
Wishes there was some way
She could transform
From an ugly duckling to a swan
If only.
Her heart constricts
She watches on helplessly
As his stunning goddess of a girlfriend
Struts up
And completes their 'picture-perfect couple' look
Instantly she regrets
Her geeky, homely exterior
Her plain, unshapely figure
What was the use, she thinks
Of having more than enough brains
If you couldn't even find love?
If only.
She would willingly spare a few A's
Off her hard-earned results
If she could only capture his interest
If he could only learn to like her
If only.
But, she thinks as she slams her locker door shut
They were only dreams, and dreams
Never do come true.
It would never do
To hope for miracles
