Attack of the Killer Bugs that Ate Tucson
Chaper 1
Running. Running on a dusty and sandy dirt road.
She flew like the wind. She had never run so fast in her life. But as far as she knew, her life wouldn't last much longer.
Fear was on her face. Terror to be more precise. But she also had determination. She wasn't going to die so easily. They would have to catch her first.
And so she ran down that still dusty road early in the morning as everybody else relaxed in bed or were getting an early morning coffee. People in these parts don't rush mornings like these. They are simply too wonderful. But then, they didn't know what she knew. They hadn't seen - yet - what she had seen. But then, they probably wouldn't last long enough to give it a second thought.
And so she ran. Spurred on by the thoughts of her children. She would do anything to save them -- if she had it in her power. Thankfully, they had not stayed at home that night. Thankfully, they were miles from her, although that really didn't seem like it was nearly far enough away right now.
And so she ran. Past the neighbor pruning her garden. Past the lonely mailboxes lined up in a row so the mailman wouldn't have to drive down the long dirt roads. Past the Saguaro cactuses that grew in abundance in this area.
And as she ran she thought of all they had worked for. It was all gone now. In a flash, it was consumed like so much hay in a blazing inferno. But that didn't matter a bit now. No, what mattered was running. Running and staying alive.
Running and staying ahead of those hellish killer bugs.
They were after her. They were after everything.
They were death on wings.
And she ran to get away.
