Grace looked ahead at Zoe's back. She shivered delightedly, thinking of what lay ahead, only minutes away. She stared at the tall mountains, growing higher with every breath of clean, sweet-smelling air that Grace breathed. Zoe inhaled deeply. The air, the delicious air! Nothing can compare, to sweet, clean, fresh air! ^I'm a poet and I didn't even know it!^ thought Grace.
"We're almost there!" called Zoe over her shoulder to Grace and the Jeks. Grace looked over her shoulder as well, gazing at the large group of hoverbikes in a v-formation just behind her. After Carol had been arrested, they had ridden back to Eddis, the slum where the Jeks lived. They had ridden through the streets, calling out that the Jeks were all free, free, free.
She still recalled the disbelieving faces of them all. Luckily, They hadn't mentioned Grace's parents yet. She had a feeling that They had told them, but an even stronger one that They wouldn't care. ^Just another burden off their backs.^ Grace shook off the thought. Suddenly, they were in the mountains. Identical gasps of awe issued from every mouth, Grace included. The mountains were so. ihuge!/i Zoe grinned crazily and consulted a digital notebook.
"This way!" she called again, and veered off to her left. They swerved through valleys and huge firs, soaring hundreds of feet into the air. Suddenly, Zoe stopped. Grace slammed on her brakes to avoid crashing into her, hearing the others behind her do the same. "Everyone ok?" asked Zoe concernedly. A weak corous of 'yes' and 'fine' echoed back to her. Zoe sighed with relief. She got off her hoverbike and strode towards a vertical cliff face, everyone else mimicking her.
She glanced at the notebook again, and pressed her hand to a roundish brown spot, sunken into the stone. She pressed on it, and it sank further. She then pulled out a handle-like formation set in a circle of grey, twisted it halfway around, then put it back. Zoe stepped back, gesturing for everyone to do the same.
They formed a half circle around the rock. A short girl near the middle of the circle squealed. Grace stood with her mouth open as the entire cliff face rose up into the mountain, revealing a short tunnel. At the other end, bright sunlight shone. They raced each other to it. Grace reached it first, and stopped, an overwhelming sense of home coming to her. Everyone else, from the looks on their faces, felt the same.
It was a large valley, covered in bright green grass and tall trees, every kind you could imagine. A bright, sparkling blue river ran through the bottom, pooling into a deep blue-green lake in the middle. There were also numerous caves, perfect for exploring, which were shadowed in the side of the mountain. Best of all, little silver tree houses glittered among the trees, high above ground with silvery ladders hanging from them.
Zoe turned around, facing the Jeks and Grace. "Who here votes for Grace to be one of us?" she roared. Every voice cried out an affirmative. Grace felt tears welling in her eyes.
"Thank you," she whispered. Zoe raised her hands.
"I hereby christen this place, Haven!" she shouted. An answering yell rose from the Jeks, Grace included. The Jeks flooded down the hill, some people yelling directions for boys, some for girls. Zoe sauntered over to Grace and put one arm around her shoulders. She drew her tight.
"Well," said Zoe. "we made it."
