WAITING

The cruel game that is waiting

Messes with your mind

Planting niggling seeds of doubt

Until peace you cannot find

Invading your thoughts with worry

Plunging you into despair

Persuading you to stress over things

Which initially were never there

Immersing your innocent ideas

In negativity

Blowing things out of proportion

Until you cannot see

Past the convincing fabrications

Which you think will never cease

Always making you assume the worst

Never allowing any peace

Even when the day is over

And you've settled into sleep

Your dreams are filled with labyrinths

For you've fallen in too deep

It doesn't matter how hard you try

Those doubts won't go away

And the niggling seeds from yesterday

Are the trees you see today

With branches thick and twisted

And leaves that stick like glue

A trunk which exceeds the heavens

And eyes watching all you do

Ensuring that you know you're judged

With every choice you make

Reminding you the stakes are high

So do not make mistakes

Trees intertwine to become forests

Of never-ending gloom

Like spider-webs which stretch forever

Hinting at impending doom

Then these towers team up against you

And when you try to flee

They trap you in their clutches

And laugh incessantly

Such a firm grip on your conscience

Does a seed of doubt possess

And the deep agony it could cause

Is anybody's guess

For how far can you be tortured

By the seeds that have been sown

When the full depths of the mind

Are still not fully known

But perhaps it could answer

Why people's lives are full of pain

If you stop to reconsider

That life is a waiting game

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This was meant to be a poem about how unsettling waiting can be, especially when waiting for something that perhaps afterwards, you wish you never found out. Somehow, it turned out a bit darker than I anticipated. At least I think so. Either way, I hope this poem made some sense. Please review. Greatly appreciated :)
