I was outside listening to the birds sing
When I saw a butterfly with an injured wing
I quickly got a jar and a couple of leafs
I hoped that it would find some relief
Soon it was better it's wings all healed
But still I kept the jar tightly sealed
It was so beautiful; I did not want it gone
I wanted to see its wings, the color of dawn
Soon it lost color and began to fade
It was trapped in the glass jail I had made
The butterfly died in its own fragile way
I buried it in the garden where it would soon decay
It had not an intelligent mind but a pure will
A beautiful essence of a rainbow I killed
It never had a chance to fly
To join its brethren in the sky
Fragrant flowers it never found
And now a rainbow lies buried in the ground
