The Foolish Race
by Jareth Valentine

Long ago, there was a time,
when there was reason to the rhyme,
and everything the world was made of
fit together perfectly.

Then one race rose, to two from four,
said, "We'll be savage beasts no more!
To live this way is surely not
the way that we were meant to be!"

And so the race defied the gods,
and set themselves at once at odds
with their place in the Grand Design,
the very place they still belong.

And though the world began to cry,
the race goes on, not knowing why,
And never understanding; they've
defied their nature all along.
