Prologue: Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, in a land called Ayaila, a set of twins were born to the king and queen of Ayaila, a boy, Aricin, and a girl, Amaranta. The kingdom rejoiced and was glad for an heir.

Princess Amaranta Phoenix and Prince Aricin Phoenix lived in happiness for several years. They had few playmates as children, only the son and daughter of a lord and lady, Riley Harris, who was two years older than the twins, and his younger sister Sara, who was exactly their age.

But Sara and Riley's father, the aged Lord Riley Harris I, was not quite so content with his role in society. The prince and princess were only ten, he led a revolt against the government of Ayaila. The king was killed, and the queen and her children were banished to a far region of Ayaila as servants.

The fallen queen remarried to the master of the house she served in, a Lord Carman Marks. She was allowed to do nothing with her children's positions in the household.

They lived peacefully, quietly, unnoticed by the household or the town, for four years until one cold day in December when the twins were fourteen. Amaranta, Aricin, and their mother, Rose, went for a walk in the snow.
