I can see the shadows moving
I see them every day
And here I am, stuck in the past
With shadows in my way

Been clutching at straws for so long
In darkness and in light
I don't know quite what else to do
Still lonely in the night

There are straw people in my mind
Made up of friends gone by
Foolish to think they'll still be here
Can't help but wonder why

I don't want to move me forward
Can't stand the winds of change
But winds and rain will come again
It's me that has to change

I'm firmly rooted in the past
When I should look ahead
Don't want to say my last goodbyes
Without them I feel dead

I need them but they don't need me
So simple and so clear
The straws that blow far in the wind
The straws that I held dear
