Name: Lyra Symol

Age: 13

Orders: seek and destroy

Mission: accepted

"Lyra! Lyra!"

"mmmmm"

"Wake up right this instant, or I send you out the window!"

Said the woman losing patience at last.

The woman's name was Martha symol, Lyra's mother. She was a plump woman, wearing an apron, black hair almond eyes and waving a wand.

"Put that down!" said Lyra, who had finally come out from under the covers.

Lyra was a pretty girl with her mothers raven black hair and her fathers emerald eyes.

Lyra was also too late. Just as she was grabbing for her mother's wand, a shot of red sparks exploded from the tip putting her bed up in flames.

Quickly Lyra put out both hands and thought /water/ water streamed from her hands effectively putting out the flames.

She turned on her mother "mother please control your anger this is the third time this week!"

And with that, their day started.

First, Lyra got dressed in a lavender robe. A witches robe has very wide sleeves, but the rest was just like a dress that came to her ankles. The materiel is very light and floaty, and spelled to keep you at the perfect temperature, not to hot and not too cold.

Next she went down stairs and sat at the table. Waving her hands, with minimal concentration a glass of milk and a plate of pancakes appeared in front of her.

As she began to eat, her mother came down stairs talking in French to it seemed her hand. What was really weird was that her hand was talking back.

Lyra, used to this kind of thing, ate faster hoping to avoid-

"Morning!"

Her little sister. Lara. Lyra's mother had a thing about L's .

Lara was pretty much the exact opposite of Lyra. Blond hair blue eyes, and, for now, absolutely no signs of magic.

Lyra herself didn't now her limits yet, so you couldn't really tell how powerful she was. More powerful then her mother, but that was pretty common.

"Good morning." She said before grabbing her kit and bolting out the door.

Once she was outside she sat down and opened her mage kit.

Inside were 5 miniature brooms, 2 notebooks pure black, a miniature cauldron, and all sorts of potion ingredients.

Selecting a broom she snapped her kit shut and stood up.

Placing her kit on the ground, she held the miniature broom out in front of her saying,

"Gather wind, fire, water, earth

light and time hear my plea

undo the spell, cast away the chains

make this broom fly again!"

the usual rush of magic filled her and with a small flash of light her broom became full size. It quivered in her hand and she laughed out loud.

Grabbing her kit she swung her leg over the broom and it took off towards the sky.

After she got over the joy of flight she began to look around.

They had only moved here 2 weeks ago, and all of that time had been spent at witch councils and meetings.

You see only two witch family's may live in a town 3 if it is a city.

So, her mother as leader of the council had a lot to do. You see this town had never had one witch, much less two witch family's.

She considered going to the mountains and decided to do that later. Right now she wanted to check out the beach.

She may not be a full-fledged witch yet, but she was still bound by the witches code.

A part of witch distinctly said 'help where you can' she knew about 30 witches that didn't fallow that part of the code, but that was not the point.

There had been rumors about a toxic sea around here, that on its own was dangerous but it was a local swimming place as well. That was why she was making it her first stop.

She let herself down gently on the sand and let out a long unhappy breath.

Most of this sea was black, with dead fish and other animals all along the shore.

A group about her age was having a cookout stopped and stared at her.

She sighed again. She hadn't paticulary wanted an audience for this, though it might help. A lot of places around here were supposed to be like this, so they were going to have to get used to magic sometime.

Placing her broom into thin air she opened her kit and began to look through it pulling out certain vials and a small cloth.

She began to close her kit when someone said "er... excuse me miss?"

It was a boy, brown hair hazel eyes around her age. Snapping her kit shut briskly she said "yes?"

"er, excuse me for asking but are you a witch?"

"Yes. Do you have a problem with witches?"

"no, it's just, there have never been any witches around here before."

Throwing a glance at the water she thought /I'll bet./ but all she said was.

"Well, now there are, and if you don't mind, I need to do something about this beach."

"If you'll pardon me saying so miss-"

"Lyra."

"Right. Lyra. If you'll pardon me saying so, there's nothing you can do about the beach. We have had Mages up here, and they said it would take decades."

She ground her teeth. Mages. Off course. She had to force herself not to scoff.

It was common knowledge that Mages were just magicians in disguise.

She had to handle this properly. "What's your name?" she asked.

"Robert. Rob for short."

"Okay, Rob. If I do some" she waved her fingers, the controversial sign for witch magic. "Will you or your friends get freaked out?"

"We won't. We watched the Mages work."

/fantastic./

"Okay, I am going to have to ask you guys to stay away from the water while I'm working, and probably for a little while after that. Okay?"

"No problem." He said walked back to his friends.

Walking forward she sat down on a rock by the waters edge. Opening her vials, she poured a little bit from each in her hand and sprinkled it in to the water murmuring in the old language. When all of it was in the water she said the last line of that spell. The result was instantaneous. The water began to bubble and foam and she knew from experience that it was very hot. What the spell was supposed to do was burn everything until it was back to it's original state, but she had put in perimeters so that it wouldn't go all the way back changing everything it touched.

After a few moments the bubbling died down and the foam disappeared.

When it was all gone she smiled, because the water was crystal clear.

Gathering her things she went back on to the shore and put her Vials away.

Then she stopped and frowned before beginning to sort through her vials again. Finding the one she wanted, she pulled it out.

It was round, about the size of her palm and full of a Grey powder.

Then she beckoned to the group.

Immiedeitly they scrambled up and came over to her. As they came she counted them. 3 girls 4 boys.

When they were all over by her she said "Hi, as you probably know, my name is Lyra. And if you don't mind I could use a favor."

"Sure." Came the collective response.

"Okay, see this powder? I need you to sprinkle it all over the beach.

They nodded and she handed some powder around.

She had to admit they worked fast.

"Okay, now you need to all get in the water for a few minutes."

They all moved into the water eager to see more magic.

There actually wasn't much to see. She just stood there and murmured under her breath. Then it started, slowly at first then faster.

It was like time was moving faster on the beach. Dead animals decayed, and sand was burned clean as though the sun had started doing the work of a thousand years in a minute.

Finally it was done, and the beach looked as good as new.

When they got back on the beach however, they discovered her packing her things up.

"Where are you going?" asked Rob.

"It is almost lunch time and I need to go."

"You can have lunch with us." He said.

She kept a smile on her face even though she was getting irritable.

"I am really sorry but I have to go."

With that she picked up her kit and climbed on her broom sidesaddle for once. (she loathed sidesaddle)

"Where do you live?" asked Rob.

She sighed. "We are at the very end of jade." She said before kicking off.

/I hope mom doesn't kill me/ she thought as she sped home
