of civilized beings

we call ourselves superior beings,
civilized, as compared to animals,
intelligent, rulers over the world,
true in all that we do and think and say.
half-seeing through those blank and hollow eyes,
lost, we stagger, groping in the darkness,
but with a sense of pleasure, not longing
for the light to pierce our very beings.
penetrating our souls, eternally,
the black, it stains, permeating the mind,
cold seeping in our lifeless hearts of stone,
veiling our senses and shrouding the truth.
bitter, caustic, and burning with hatred,
destructive, delighting in injuring,
we decimate our own kind in anger,
and take joy in mutilating beauty,
entertained by violence, the sight of blood,
crimson streams forever running, cold pools,
unleashed from the warmth of its pulsing home,
feeding our avaricious appetites,
satisfying our deepest desires.
lives lacerated, reduced to nothing,
adulterated with unbridled lust,
drowning in this evil, fury unbound.
who are we to blame but our own species,
not at all innocent and pure in heart?
we alone, who have fallen from the start,
are culpable for this reigning chaos.
