Remodeling

The building falls
Before painted blue
Cartoon skies
Too clear for December
Too cold for June
A blue that never faded
Like lead paint
Chipped away
And eaten
Poisoned you
Called you names
Hit you when you cried

The door that smashed your finger
Making it turn black
When he was mad
Doesn't open anymore

The bathroom floor
You slept on
The night you locked him out
Is falling through
Leaving plaster and tile
Resting in the basement
On a box of childhood memories
You were always
Too scared to open

A world collapses in
On itself
Carrying away
The taste of blood in your mouth
Killing all the nights
You couldn't go home
Because you knew he was waiting

And now that the hate is gone
You're painting new walls
In new buildings
Of new futures

But cartoon skies soak up screams
You could never utter
Turning them a blue
That your mind will
Never let you fade
