Author's Note:

More old Creative Writing assignments, (yeah, I know... =^_^;=), but I really like this one, it's all short and creepy and based on stuff my mom was telling me about the night before I wrote this.
The assignment was supposed to be writing a long setting for a story (but I think I may have departed from that idea just a little =^_^;=)...so~o here we go, a setting for a horror story, which totally belongs to me, LH-chan (not that anyone else would really want it =^_~=).

City at Night
LH-chan '03

Steel grey...
The pavement, rain-slicked surface shining dully in headlights for a moment as the car passes, before it is swallowed again by enveloping darkeness.
The sky, sheets of rain pouring from its starless depths.
The buildings, gaunt and looming, the grey of their bricks broken only by the souless shadows of windows and the infinite darkness of intersecting alleyways.

Silence, so deep it drowns out the sound of the rain and presses heavily against the ears, broken only for a moment by a car's passing. The steady hum of the white Volkswagen's engine and the rapid throbbing of the driver's heart.

Chill air meets the driver's warm breath against the windshield; fogging the glass, distorting the shadows. No scent drifts upon the air: food, exaust, garbage, the distinct human city smells. All are washed from the air by the rain; gathering in deep, oily puddles by the roadside.

Still the car presses forward, its driver unwilling to stop, to pause, as she passes. The city presses in around her, swallowing all traces of her passing. Closing in like a huge steel box.

There is silence.
The city looms.

It waits...

Owari.
