Paige waited for Cameron in the room marked Detention with a small smile on her face. Her day had been surprisingly enjoyable.
All day people had been treating her noticeably different. Between classes in the halls, jocks and cheerleaders cheered for her at the top of their lungs as she walked passed them. During classes, especially in Mr. Todd's, kids were whispering about how "Paige Wilson stood up to Mr. Todd and lived." And at lunch the preps forced her to sit with them. She had become popular without even trying. Life was good.
The opened and Cameron walked in. Paige looked behind him and saw that
a group of girls had followed him. Cameron sighed, the exasperation and impatience showing clearly on his face. He put his books down on a nearby desk and turned to face his stalkers.
"Ladies, it's been great, but I think it's time for you to go. But I'll be here tomorrow, don't worry," he added hastily when they began to protest.
Unwillingly, the girls left and Cameron closed the door behind them.
"Good bye, girls," he murmured in exhaustion as he slid into the desk that supported his books.
"So, you've been here one day and you already have a fan club. Amazing," Paige said, her smile replaced by a curious expression.
Cameron had jumped when he heard her voice and he turned so he could see her.
"Paige!" He flushed. "I didn't see you...Sorry you had to see that, I couldn't get them away-"
"No, it's alright-I mean, no it isn't...I'm sorry you have to go through that sort of thing. You're new; they should give you a break."
"Yeah, that's true, I guess." Cameron looked thoughtful for a moment. "Were your parents mad?"
"My mom, she overreacts a lot, and she grounded me. I don't think my dad knows yet." Paige paused. "What about you?"
"They just yelled at me and told me to never do it again, as if starting a gum riot is something all teenagers go at some time in their lives."
Paige laughed. "I don't know, it sounds pretty realistic to me."
Just then, the door swung open and two more people walked in: a short guy with baggy jeans, silver chains, and cornrolls and a girl with the same style, but her hair was flat ironed straight.
"Can you believe that bitch?" the girl was saying angrily. "All I did was know that fat heifer Jennita's front teeth out and the hag gave me detention."
They sat down in the back, both sitting on top of their desk.
"Girl, you lucky she didn't press charges on your crazy ass," the boy said smiling.
"That's BS, Dontae. Can't nobody press no charges on somebody for knocking their teeth out," the girl replied, examining her press on nails.
"'Member Shawn from over at Weston High?"
"Well, he knocked out this dude's tooth and he got sued for eight hundred dollars."
"Man, that's stupid." The girl jumped off the desk and walked to the front of the room, where a teacher's desk stood. She sat down in the cushiony chair and looked around the room.
"Let's see who we got in here," she said with mild interest. Her dark eyes swept the room and fell on Cameron.
"You the new boy, huh?"
"That's right?" Cameron answered and he pounded his chest twice with his fist before making a sideways peace sign.
The girl laughed. "You crazy, white boy. But you're cute. What's your name?"
"Cameron...all right, that's cool. Who else we got in here?" Her eyes found Paige and she smiled. "I know who you is-you're the girl who stood up to Mr. Todd."
"And lived," Cameron added.
"Paige Wilson," Dontae studied her. "You an Oreo?"
Cameron looked at him. "Hey, man don't be saying things like that."
"What you gonna do, white boy?"
Dontae moved off the desk and toward Cameron who had stood up.
"Kick your ass if you diss my girl again," Cameron replied calmly.
Dontae raised a thick fist. "You think you can kick my ass?"
"Hey, Dontae. If you get in trouble again, you'll get locked up, remember?" the girl said lazily from behind the desk.
Defeated, Dontae put his fist down and slumped to the back of the room.
"By the way, I'm Melissa, y'all."
"Nobody cares Miss Williams," said a voice by the door.
Cameron groaned and Paige rolled her eyes.
No one had told them that Mr. Todd had detention duty.
So what you think...crappy, ok, good? Review and tell me! Oh and I'm sorry for all the swearing if I offended anyone.
