A/n: This is based on a poem that I'll be posting soon. Please R/R, as I've been feeling kinda depressed lately.
The Cliff Attempt
She knew what she had come to this edge of town for, even though there was nothing but a sea cliff and few ever came there.
The contemplation of her life was nothing. Those who knew her would quickly replace her. 'Or thought they knew me' She had thought as she walked over. Yes, her best friend could lead their little 'group', the kids at school would find someone new to torture and spread rumors about, her family wouldn't miss her at all, and he... well, he deserved better than a girl who was always in jeans, t-shirts, an ugly dirty blonde ponytail, and ugly glasses framing weird, blue-green eyes.
As she's made her way over the sky had rapidly begun to darken until it became the light rain now over shadowing her final resting-place. Even thought the rain was light, the wind had always howled at that cliff, making the breaking waves give a deafening roar.
She stood there for a few minutes, hesitating. Maybe, could she be making a mistake? Is there something, anything, that she could have to offer in this world?
No, she finally, firmly decided. No one cares, no one would want me to hang around any more. She took a step towards the edge. One more and they wouldn't be able to make fun of, yell at, torture, or ignore her anymore.
"Stop! What the hell are you doing?" She turned around to find him, standing there in his trademark hat, baggy sweater, and jeans sticking to him from the rain.
"I'm gonna jump. I won't be missed." She called to him, wondering why the hell he wasn't back at his own home, nice and dry, like he should be, instead of out here, sopping wet, with a girl who was about to pitch herself into the dark, swirling abyss.
"Yeah, you will." What? Who in their right mind would miss her, the little know-it-all, ugly, bookworm-drama freak?
"Who would be stupid enough to miss me?"
"Me, that's who!" He screamed over the roar of the waves.
"Why the fuck would you miss me?" His words had hardly gotten through to her.
"Because I love you, goddamit!" She was stunned. Too stunned, even to hear the cracking of the rock she was standing on, as it stared to crumble into the sea. On instinct, she reached up and grabbed the edge.
Apparently, his reactions were also a bit delayed, as he only ran over and grabbed her hand as she lost her grip.
With a small amount of pain to her wrists, he yanked her up and away from the edge. She pulled away from his gentle grasp violently, about to scream at him for messing with her emotions, until her fire-filled eyes met his.
His eyes only held truth, love, and concern, all just for her. What he had said wasn't to trick her, nor a lie to keep her from jumping.
It was nothing but the truth.
She couldn't help it. The flames in her eyes were quickly quenched by tears as she ran at him and hugged him as if he were her only lifeline. He held her, stroking her hair and whispering to her that it'd all be alright and that he was always there for her. The tears came harder when she realized what she'd almost done.
After she felt that she had no more tears to cry, she looked up at him. The rain had long since stopped, even though it was still cloudy and dark. She was about to say 'Thank you', but what came out was something that she'd never thought she'd say aloud.
"I love you, too."
She stood up on her tiptoes and kissed him on the lips at full, mind-blowing force. She knew that they'd always be there to keep each other from the edge.
