As I Try to Understand
Author:

When I first was learning about slavery, I felt very guilty for just being me. I think this is how I delt with those feelings and the words I say are very true. I do not want to offend by this poem, I just want to understand.

Title: As I Try to Understand . . .
Author: Heather P.

Those long lean fingers,
Crossing my brow.

Labor scarred and depression burned,
Pride so strong that it wells even within me,
Eclectic energy from primal fires.

It is me that I want your beauty to enter.

I adore that within you,
Such dark warmth.

Lightened eyes whose stare is filled with the past,
Something deep and conceived of fear,
Unreasoning fills me.

Something out of my control but not wanted.

Expanding my soul to accept you,
Strengthens me.

Because you will better me and let me understand,
The world by your lives and our future,

It will be my future I adore from you.
