Grave Errors

And so it begins…

The thick mist shrouding the night swallowed up the sound of clashing metal and threatening yells coming from the graveyard. Two lone figures were locked in fierce battles with their vampiric enemy. One, a mortal male, was losing his fight to a strong, dark haired vampire. On the other side of the cemetery it was the vampires being slaughtered. Faster than the human eye could follow, the phosphorescent figure was efficiently dispensing with the bloodsucking vermin surrounding her. The ethereal luminosity of her skin contrasted starkly with the sickly pallor of the vampires. This woman, this being, was faster and stronger than her vampire foe. She was Chael, the half-vampire, half-angel who set out to rid the world of the murdering creatures with an insatiable blood lust. Once like her full blood kin, she now protected the mortals. The two figures fought their adversaries, one winning her fight, the other struggling to stay alive.

The cry was such that it tore through her soul, freezing her where she stood. Whirling around in the direction of the sound, Chael gasped at what she saw. Her beloved Julian stood in shock, staring at the blood dripping from his stomach. The vampire savoured the moment, hungrily licking the fresh blood off the long knife in his hands. He had jet-black hair, piercing ruby eyes and a finely chiselled face. His toned body moved with precision and skill, head always held high. The vampire's almost healthy pallor sickened Chael; he had recently fed. With blood smeared over his face, he raised the knife ready to strike the mortal blow.

Time slowed down for Chael as she ran towards them. The remaining vampire struck out with his blades as she ran, slicing into her arm and leg. Without faltering, Chael, faster than the vampire could see, whipped around and sliced off his head. Her wounds healed quickly as she turned again to Julian. But she was too late. A piercing scream escaped her lips as the blade slashed through the air and into Julian’s chest. The vampire pulled it out laughing as his victim stumbled backwards and fell to the ground. She ran towards him and straight into the blade that had butchered her Julian. Shocked by the wound, she gasped for breath and stared at the grinning vampire at the other end of the blade.

"I admire your fighting style. Precise, eloquent and graceful. The way a vampire should be. Too bad you let your emotions get in the way. It will be such a shame to kill you; you are the most exquisite being I have ever seen. We could have made great partners." Saying this, he pulled the knife from Chael’s stomach, confident of her demise. While he gloated, she launched herself into the air and knocked him to the ground. Grabbing his fallen weapon, she held it to his throat.

"You should have killed me when you had the chance." With that she thrust the blade into his neck.

Running to Julian, she was distressed by the death in his eyes. Ruby stained tears rolled down her face.

"Don’t cry Chael, I’m alright."

"I know that Julian."

"Chael?"

"Yes Julian?"

"Why have you never turned me?"

"Into a Vampire? I love you too much Julian, to damn you to that eternal hell."

"I love you too…"

Cradling Julian’s lifeless body, Chael looked around at the carnage littering the graveyard. The words of the prophecy echoed in her head.

"Grave errors will you make, Loved ones will you forsake."

"I’m sorry Julian."

And so it goes on…
