Her Angel Wings

The preacher told me
To behave because
Granny's watching
With big paper angel wings
Floating somewhere
On my ceiling
I used to watch for hours
Unchanging plaster
Looking for a sign
Waiting for her to shake me
Into believing
And tell me that
God exists

I went to church
To find her gone
Her empty seat left me alone
I no longer
Felt God inside of me

I cut into flesh
Searching for religion
Wanting to believe
Because she wanted me
To go to heaven

My wings were made of wax
I'm Icarus with her
Flying too close
Melting down
Dying without God
Living without Granny
