The Little Voice

When the blows keep coming,
And the screams can't be held back.
When the pain is overwhelming,
And it seems my soul is about to crack.
There's a little voice inside my head,
Yelling that it's all my fault.
Insisting that I deserve the hits,
Telling me I need the assault.
When I can't take any more,
But everything keeps coming.
When I can only sit and stare,
For crying is unbecoming.
That little voice inside my head,
Is what keeps me from fighting back.
That little voice is what holds me still,
What quiets me through the attack.
Every fiber of my being,
Believes these tiny lies.
Every piece inside my soul,
Holds back its futile cries.
The rain continues to fall,
And the lightning continues to flash.
My tears continue to drip,
And the world continues to lash.
The little voice inside my head,
Continues to justify the pain.
And all of my reserve crumbles,
And it falls just like the rain.
