A Single Smile

One night, my friend, Jason, and I were doing some homework together, completely silent. He sighed heavily.

"Is something wrong, Jason?" I asked.

"No, it's nothing," he answered, then went back to his homework.

I didn't think anything about it, so I started writing again.

Suddenly, the phone rang. I got up to answer it. Jason watched me walk to the phone.

"Yes?" I asked after I picked it up.

Then, I heard the most shocking news in my life.

I dropped the phone and stood there, completely speechless.

Jason got up and stood beside me.

"Hey, is everything all right?" he asked, concerned.

I still stood there, spacing out.

"Erin?"

He put his hand on my shoulder, but took it away quickly. He felt my body trembling.

"Hey, what's wrong?"

I felt a couple of teardrops roll down my cheek. I put one hand on the wall beside me, the other up to my face to stifle my crying.

"Damn it." I said, trying hard not to cry.

Then something amazing happened.

Jason kissed me on the cheek, trying to take my tears away.

He put his hand on my shoulder again, and I stopped shaking.

"Don't cry, please."

I looked into his amazing brown eyes, his brown hair hanging over them, full of kindness and concern.

"What's wrong?"

I looked down, away from him, and said softly, "My mom just died in a car crash."

He took me in his arms and hugged me tightly.

Then he whispered in my ear, "Don't worry, everything is going to be all right. There will still be people who care about you and love you."

Jason stroked my long, black hair softly, trying to comfort me.

I cried into his shoulder, feeling his embrace.

"I love you, Erin."

I looked up towards him. He was really serious.

"Jason."

My tears were slowly dying as he placed his hand on my cheek.

I smiled the only smile I did for a long time.

"I love you too."
