Chapter 2 - The Feed
"I don't want to." Iccory laughed at me. I stared at my sire. I was entirely serious. "I mean it."
He stopped laughing, "If you don't, you'll starve."
"I thought vampires couldn't die unless we got a stake through the heart or the sun comes up." I expressed my extent of knowledge on the myths.
"The sun won't kill you, but it hurts so we tend to keep away from it. The stake through the heart...well that's a lie. It's a sybolism really. Vampires can only die from a broken heart."
"Oh. Why do I need to do this then?" I gestured to the limp body of the unconscious man that Iccory held within his arms.
"Because if you don't you will starve. Your powers will weaken and you'll have no reason to live forever."
"Powers?" I never used to believe in vampires until now but that didn't mean that I suddenly believed all that stuff about wizards and goblins was true aswell.
"Not magical ones. Better senses, speed, healing and strength. Your energy will drain if you don't drink." He offered me the neck once again by thrusting the man in my direction causing his body to jerk violently. "He doesn't feel the pain."
"But I don't want to..." Iccory sighed.
"I know you don't, but you must. If you don't drink now you will need to drink tomorrow. It's not the easiest thing to get a feed to trust you." A feed. Iccory had been talking about feeds for a long time now. Was it too painful to even him to call them his victims?
"I can't." I took a step backwards in further protest.
"You will. Soon the hunger will take over and you will have to drink to stay healthy. Make it easy for yourself."
I looked at the man lying in Iccory's arms. He looked peaceful. "I'm not a murderer."
"I never asked you to kill him. I just want you to drink. As long as you stop when I tell you to he'll survive and wake up feeling like he has a hangover, which he probably would have had anyway."
"He won't wake up when I bite him? He won't remember?" I bit my own lip nervously.
"Not at all. He's asleep. If he remembers it he'll think it was a dream. He won't feel the pain, it's a very pleasurable experience for the feed." Iccory pushed the man's head to the right a little more and looked up at me as he pointed to the bare neck. "Would you like me to show you?"
I gasped in horror at the thought of watching him feed upon this poor man. "No!"
"Then do you want to drink or not? Last chance tonight." I considered this. I had watched Iccory talk with this man and get to know him a little before he led him to this alleyway and knocked him out. Iccory wasn't heartless. He didn't want to hurt this man any more than I did.
"Okay." I bent to my knees and inhaled deeply. I placed a hand on the man's head and the other on his shoulder. I tried to force them apart as if the gap wasn't quite wide enough.
"Gently." Iccory whispered next to me. I looked into his deep, brown eyes and found reassurance. Slowly I moved closer to the man's neck.
This is not happening...
My breath tickled the skin on the man's neck and he moaned quietly. I opened my mouth and wet the surface with my tongue before I closed my eyes and bit through the skin.
It's not real...
The liquid flowed into my mouth as I sealed the wound with my lips. The sweetness of the blood reminded me of my transformation and I was glad at that moment to have Iccory by my side. I pulled the man closer into me and drank his life fluid fiercely.
He's not in pain...I'm not a vampire. I'm human.
I didn't feel human. I felt like an animal. Yet I'd never felt that I belonged like I did now. The blood was satisfying but the hunger was still there. The hunger. It didn't go away, you could feel it through your whole body. It was like a disease and only human blood was the antidote.
I'm still hungry...
I could hear something in the distance. A voice maybe? Iccory. He was telling me to stop. He wanted me to stop but I couldn't. The hunger was decreasing but it was still there. I needed to keep drinking, I couldn't stop.
"Stop! You'll kill him."
I heard these words and I wanted to stop, I didn't want this man to die but I couldn't. I had to keep drinking. I had to satisfy the hunger.
I felt a hand on my own neck. It caressed my neck and cheek gently and moved towards my lips. It tasted of blood. I opened my mouth and my teeth ripped the skin of the man's neck but pulled free and I licked the fingers at my lips. Iccory's fingers, Iccory's powerful blood.
I turned to face him, my green eyes filled with horror at what I'd just done. "It's okay." He assured me, "He'll survive."
I tried to speak but I had to lick blood first from my lips. "What have I done?"
"What you had to do." Iccory leant into the man and licked the trickles of blood from his neck. He then wrapped the man's jacket back around him and propped him up against the wall like a doll on a shelf.
My traumatised expression alerted Iccory to my feelings and he hugged me and whispered in my ear, "You had to." I felt a special bond with Iccory. I shared some of my blood with him as he was my sire but with that I was connected to him in some other way I couldn't explain. All I knew is that Iccory made me feel safe and I trusted him. A kiss sneaked onto my lips. His lips were warm against my wet, bloodied ones. I pulled away remembering that I had a boyfriend whom I still cared for even though things had changed dramatically. One of the few things I remembered.
"Sorry." he whispered in my ear.
"It's alright...just...my boyfriend..." He said nothing but I knew he understood and I could tell, somehow, that it hurt him.
We lay in an embrace for a long time before Iccory finally spoke. "Dawn will arrive soon. We'd better get back to the pack." I nodded and followed him as we ran down the alleyway.
R & R please!
