"Are you the dark part of my soul?" she said it so softly, so
innocently, he barely realized he heard her. Her obsidian eyes were
trained on his face, though since he was studying the floor he would have
been hard pressed to tell anyone how hw knew that, just as he knew what had
to be done.
"Two parts of a whole-" he began.
"Two pieces of a soul-" she replied.
In unison now, "One heart to hold."
She watched him, heard him say the words she had only dreamed of in
that sleep between real sleep and waking. "Forever?" she requested
timidly.
"Never!" He shook his head, willing her to hate him, to leave it
alone, to leave him alone. It was a strange coincidence they had even in
the same city, much less to discover the connection the two had. He got up
to pace, trying to leave what he felt behind. He was here to gather slaves-
-though why a prince had to do such common labor was beyond him-and he saw
this innocent chit.
"Why? Why don't you love me?" He heard the tears in her voice and
his own heart ached in response.
"It's beyond me to love anyone one," he said, but he convinced
neither of them he believed it.
"One night is all I ask. One night to prove to you what we have
isn't normal, that we are being offered the dreams of all mortals." She
stood defiant now, spite lacing her words-for his stupidity or the fact she
regretted meeting him, he wasn't sure-as she dared him to leap off the edge
of self-control.
"No. Go find someone to love you, you idiot woman. Have a happy
life with brats and grandbrats-without me."
"You just don't get it, do you? I love you, you idiot man; I'm
connected to you for all eternity. I'll never be happy without you. I'll
leave, but I'll wait for you. Always. I love you."
With that, she left quietly, shutting the door with a quiet click.
As soon as that click sounded, he hit his knees, sobbing for all he had
foolishly shoved away.
