Look up at the night-time sky,
Focus your gaze,
And see a thousand pairs
Of cold, uncaring eyes.
When the sun peers down at you—
Unblinking in its distant observation—
It feels no obligation to care.
As one long-ago man once said,
We exist.
It’s also a basic fact, however,
That we’re the only ones to care.
This poem was inspired by a poem by Stephen Crane. In case anyone is interested in reading that poem, here’s a copy of it.
“A Man Said to the Universe” by Stephen Crane
A man said to the universe:"Sir I exist!""However," replied the universe,"The fact has not created in meA sense of obligation."
