Stargazer
by: Emily Burns
The stars are there, and have always been there.
Blanketing the skies, accenting the moon, always giving up to the sun. They are mystical things, wonderful and magical. They represent all the things in the world that we just can't understand. Everything that we don't know is up there in that blanket of sky.
Every once in a while you'll see a shooting star. The most amazing thing happens when you see a shooting star. You gain knowledge. That's why it helps when you are all alone and upset about something. Go gaze at the stars. It will help you understand what has or will be.
The stars, twinkling brightly, full of hope and loss, and knowledge. Every little thing that a human will or ever can know is up there.
The moon was full, the stars guarding it so that nobody could invade on the universe's secrets.
The moon was full.
Beneath it sat a girl, wanting to know everything.
Wanting to know everything that would become of her and her family and her friends, wanting to know everything that she would be learning in school that she would now miss. And she only wanted to know for one reason: the reason that she knew that the sun would be up soon and easily take them all away from her.
That was the only thing she felt in her heart she knew for sure. She knew that everyday, she had come one step closer to death, and she knew, she had known for a long time that today would be that day. The one day that all would come crashing down, hurting, destroying everything and everyone that she loved.
Tomorrow would be the day.
The sunlight would stream across the land, and she would know that it would be the last time she ever saw it rise.
Some people find beauty in a sunrise, some in a sunset.
She did not find anything but loathing and pain in her heart whenever the sun rose or set.
The only thing that her heart desired was to see the moon.
For it was her only time that she was truly alone with the world, everyone else asleep and no danger lurking anywhere near.
A cold wind surrounded her, and she pulled her robes closer, but never took her eyes off of the moon. For it was her heaven, her escape.
She knew that heaven was where the moon came from, because it set so much peace upon the world. It smiled down at her in a tranquil gaze, setting her in temporary bliss.
But only for a moment. Nothing more than a moment would go by that she wouldn't think about her fate that would ruin her still just budding life.
That rising sun that would shatter the life that she had come to love so much.
That would happen tomorrow.
I wish the sun would never rise again.
But it will.
Tomorrow will be the dawn of a new day, a day where no good, just evil is set upon the world, setting it in wreckage and hatred.
All sun.
No moon.
No peace, or happiness, or life.
All that was good will fade away into the night, the ungrateful sun sending them to a place where it would never have to shine on them again.
That will be us.
Tomorrow.
The sun was beginning to rise, and the stargazer closed her eyes.
And waited.
