Out of Twinlon

Chapter 1

"It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone."

-Homer Simpson

David Mallow is a normal 10-year-old boy. He lives with his dad in northern British Colombia and goes to school. He may seem normal, but something weird happened the summer before he started grade five . . .

"Are we there yet dad?" David asked his father, who is a police officer. David had lived with his aunt and uncle over the summer due to the fact that his dad had to go somewhere important and cannot take him along.

"We're almost there David," replied his father, "we're almost there." As the car drove into the driveway, they were greeted by their Jamaican neighbours: Gary, Laura and their daughter Rosa.

"Welcome back!" all of them exclaimed.

"Dave, everyone is so exited you're back," Rosa said sounding enthusiastic. "We've decided when you came back we're to play grounders. Wanna come?"

"I really do," replied David, "but I'm still suffering from a jet lag. How 'bout we do it first thing tomorrow. Let everyone know that okay?"

Rosa understood. David's aunt and uncle lived in England, which is very far away. She ran off and went to the park, where the rest of David's friends are waiting.

"I'll be in my room if you need me," David told his father as he headed into the house.

David has a fairly large room. In various spots, there are yellow 'do not cross' tape strips. In a corner lies his bed, which has two fluffy pillows and a transformers blanket. Across from the bed lies his dresser, which has a clock radio/cd player, a television, and a game cube. In another corner is where his video games and cd's are kept. And finally, two posters pinned up above his bed, one reading 'Have a Day', the other 'Have a Night'. David walked into his room and layed down on his bed.

While David was sleeping, he was dreaming. A dream like the dream he was having never occurred to him. In this dream, he was running in a forest. He was running away from something. A bounty hunter? No, a mob of citizens and a strange woman hovering above the mob. He kept on running until he tripped over a tree root. He got up to run some more, but stopped. He saw a silhouette of someone. Who was it? Was it someone friendly? As he walked closer, he saw who was behind the tree where the silhouette was standing. Suddenly . . .

Beep . . . beep . . . beep. David's alarm sounded. He got up, fully refreshed, and turned off his alarm. 8:30 a.m. "Gee, I must've overslept," he thought to himself. He changed his clothes, ate breakfast, brushed his teeth and left the house. Normally, when his dad is at work, he would either be at school during the school year, or staying at home watching television, playing video games or playing soccer with the next door neighbour. Since he made a promise to Rosa to go play grounders first thing in the morning, he took his bike and rode off to the park.

When he arrived at the park, he parked his bike on the ground and went to the play structure where Rosa's friends, Saree and Taina, were waiting.

"Where's everyone else?" David asked the girls.

"Probably still sleeping," Taina replied.

"Zose friends of yours are such major bed'eads," Saree complained. A few seconds later, David's friend Ryan and his younger brother Dylan arrived.

"So where's Rosa?" Ryan asked the trio.

"She said she'll meet us at zee ware'ouse," Saree replied. All of them left the play structure and headed over to the abandoned warehouse nearby the park.

When the group arrived at the warehouse, they were greeted by a grumpy Rosa. "Took you long enough," she grumbled.

"Can we start now?" Dylan asked anxiously to start.

"Okay," Rosa said calmly. "Who's it?"

"I vote for Dave!" Ryan exclaimed.

"All for?" Rosa asked everyone. Everyone except for David raised their hands. "All against?" David raised his hand. "Sorry Dave," Rosa said sympathetically. David closed his eyes and started counting.

"One . . . two . . . three . . . " he said as the rest ran around trying not to stay on the ground. He kept his arms in front and walked around. "Eight . . . nine . . . ten . . . GROUNDERS!" After David opened his eyes, he realized he is far away from where he was playing with his friends. He looked around and saw a painting. He walked closer. He placed his hand on the painting to touch it. As he was about to lay a finger on it, his hand went through the painting. He quickly retracted it. "Whew," he thought. "If my hand didn't get cut off, maybe if I . . . " He walked through.

In a village, a boy was running away from an angry mob. He had white skin and short hair with an indefinite colour. "Get him!" were the words coming from the mob. The boy headed into the forest. "What did you do this time Nemo?" he said to him himself. The boy looked behind him. "Damn witch, must've turned the Canis against me." He continued to run. Without notice, he tripped over a root. "No wonder momma and poppa won't let me play here." Suddenly, he saw someone behind a tree, but could not make out who it was. "Whoever you are," he yelled, "help!"

After David walked through the painting, he fell into a pool of water. He got up on his hands and knees. As he was getting up, he saw himself, but was not sure if he was himself. His ears were like an elf and his teeth became pointy and sharp, especially his canines. His hands look somewhat the same, but they now have fur and claws. He slowly stood up. He looked at his feet and noticed the same thing happened with his hands. Last but not least, a wolf's tail. He walked around the forest and saw a boy somewhat his age running away from an angry mob with a woman overtop. "Gee, I wonder what they're doing?" he thought to himself. The boy came closer. David grabbed the boy by the collar of his shirt as the mob passed by.

"Whew," the boy sighed, "I thought I was a goner." He looked up at David. "Ahh!" He falls down to the ground.

"It's okay! I dunno how I ended up like this to begin with," David said trying to calm the boy. "My name is David, feel free to call me Dave."

The boy slowly got up. "I am Nemo," he said weakly.

As Nemo was gaining stability, David reflected on his dream. "The boy, Nemo, running from a mob, the mystery figure, me, what else?" He turned to Nemo. "Why were you being chased?"

"There he is!" came a voice from the mob.

"I have little time to explain," Nemo replied.

"I'll help you hide," David said trying to help him.

Nemo was uncertain if he can trust David, due to the fact that he looked like a Canis. He looked behind and saw the mob coming closer. "Alright." The two of them headed off towards where David first stepped into the dimension.
