Chaos
“A butterfly beating its wings in China
Can cause a tornado in America”

He takes a step, and
The world spins,
Turns topsy turvy and
Settles in a new pattern.
He tries again, and
The ground cracks,
Demons are loosed.
Unable to bear the Chaos
That spins around him.
He falls to his knees
and the moon drops from the sky
Shattering like ice at his feet.
He cannot move
(Forward or Back)
How should he deal,
With his new wonderland
Of Cause and Effect.
He tests the waters.
“Help me....”
The sky turns green
“Please...”
It cracks, and purple
Ooze slips through.
Fear then sticks him there,
Silent now, but thinking.
Stars twinkle, sewing up
The cracks he had made
In the now green sky.
“You broke this world.
Your kind always do.”
He stayed still,
Awaiting the effect
Of her words.
None came.
“I did not mean...”
The stars shot from the sky
Into the sea boiling the water.
“No, no one ever means anything.”
A woman steps into view.
Still no effect.
He turns his eyes upward,
And the lights flicker.
The woman is silent,
For some time.
“At least you learned
You should not try.”
She takes a rag and
Begins the motion of wiping.
From his point of view,
Everything the rag passes in front of
Returns to his definition
Of Normal.
Stars fall up
Sky turns blue
Water cools
And devils are buried once again.
When all seems to be right,
He still doesn’t move.
He keeps his eyes turned up.
Questions on his tongue.
For an answer,
The woman holds out her hand.
A butterfly rests
On her open palm.
It begins to fly,
Wings fluttering.
The higher it goes,
The more the wind blows,
Until tornadoes rage
All around them.
