"Abby, wait!" The high-pitched whiny voice that I knew belonged to Alicia Eve. I decided when she caught up, I'd call her Ally; she hated that even more than I hated Abby. I heard her tapping footsteps closing in and a shudder went down my spine.
She was next to me, the breath hissing through her purple-painted lips and her large bosom heaving. She must have run to catch up with me. Her eyes sparkled, and I couldn't tell if it was because her glittery eye make-up was caked on or because she had some nasty news that would make my day even worse.
"What do you want?" I didn't call her Ally. She looked suspicious, even with her limited capacities she could sense weakness, and there was a weariness in my voice that I just couldn't ice over.
She grinned, and began to speak in her sickeningly sweet fake voice, "I saw you with Daemean last night. He was all over you. I was just wondering how you managed to bewitch him?
There was a sudden heavy feeling in my stomach, as if I had just swallowed a stone. Ally eyed me closely, her petty mind trying to see what I was feeling. I could feel her digging for a way to hurt me, like an emotional vampire feeding off my pain. I had the sudden urge to wrap my fingers around her throat, and squeeze until her eyes popped. But I restrained myself.
"I didn't bewitch him. And nothing happened." My voice was like ice.
"Oh you didn't? I could've sworn I saw you leave with him, and you didn't come back. So, what were you doing all night, Abby?" There was a sick satisfaction in her voice. I wanted to scream.
I mentally flipped through my options. What excuse could I give her that was easily said and easily believed? "He was just driving me home."
By the look on her face I could tell she didn't know whether to believe me or not. "But he didn't come back for hours. What was he doing all that time?"
I snapped. "How should I know? He dropped me off, and then left. I'm not his baby-sitter."
Ally rolled her eyes and faked horror, "Calm down. I was just asking." She disappeared in the crowd.
The ice in my stomach melted. I headed towards class, and as I entered the room, was greeted by the angry face of my best friend, Sophie. Her eyes were hard and her face set in a glare. I opened my mouth, but she grabbed my arm and dragged me to the corner of the room before I could speak.
"What happened?" Sophie could barely contain the anger in her tone. I didn't know how to answer her; if I wanted to answer her. So I feigned ignorance.
"What are you talking about?"
Sophie drew in a deep breath before she spoke, and I saw that she was trying to not cry. I wondered how much she knew. "Well, Daemean came back to the party and was bragging how he fucked the Ice Princess Abigail."
Something in me clicked, and I was at ease. I knew it would be so much easier to lie to Sophie. "He's an asshole. The only thing he did with me was drive me home." I couldn't believe how slick my words were.
She smiled at; she believed me. I could not believe what I had done.
