Chapter 5
Alone time with Blake
Both guys? Miracle isn’t it? Although the only one I knew about at the time was Jayden. Although sitting there watching Blake kiss her was so hard…for a moment I wished it was me with my arms around him receiving that tender kiss but then I realized what I was thinking and quickly shielded my emotions but not before I remembered Jayden’s kiss. I felt like I was betraying Jayden at that moment of wishing I was kissing his brother but then his own words shot like an arrow straight through my heart; “late night mistake” he could have any girl he wanted and I think he knew that. I was probably just some experiment, to see if he really could have any girl including his best friend. Well it turns out at that moment he could have but no longer; I won’t just be someone’s late night plaything but then again I will never be anything to anyone; I am nothing special. Anyways it was at that point where my life began to change and change drastically….and Jayden made a few changes of his own as well…one’s I realized I didn’t like…ones that made me…well read and see for yourself…
Several days passed since Melody and Jayden’s kiss. They both hid it so well…looking at them there was no hint or difference between them and their relationship. There was no awkwardness nor were there love struck looks. He appeared to be the protective best friend and her the young woman who was a recluse except when it came to him. No one could see the doubtful almost longing thoughts they each had about the other, or the thoughtful almost sad gazes they cast at the other when no one was looking. It was a fall afternoon when the change first became noticeable to others…and it was Blake that first noticed it. Blake was walking home from school with his brother and Melody but was walking a bit behind them. They weren’t talking a whole lot like they normally did when he walked home with them in fact he didn’t think he had heard such a silence from them in forever. He was about to say something to them about it when he saw Jayden’s hand slowly make its way over to Melody’s and clasp her tiny hand in his own. he stopped dead in his tracks when he saw it and watched as Melody slowly turned her head to look at Jayden in surprise before she turned her head back to the ground in front of her; she didn’t smile at him and delight in the gesture but she didn’t reject it and pull away either. They had held hands several times while watching a movie or just sitting together contentedly…she just took it as a simple, friendly gesture when he intertwined their fingers. Jayden however loved the feel of her small hand in his and how perfectly it fit, so he didn’t even notice when his thumb idly began to stroke the smooth skin of her wrist. Melody, however, noticed the gesture and felt a tiny tingle go down her arm; she didn’t like it because she didn’t want to feel such things for her best friend when he only thought of her as a friend so she pulled her hand away and walked a bit ahead of them. Jayden felt his heart fall at her actions and raked a hand back through his hair as he watched her walk ahead of him; head down with her hands clasped in front of her.
Blake sighed and stepped up to his brother’s side,
“What was that about?” he asked.
Jayden had forgotten his brother was with them so he took the defensive, “what was what?”
“You know what I’m talking about…so do you like her like that?”
Jayden scowled over at his older brother and shook his head; “no, not that it’s any of your business anyway”
“Touché” Blake chuckled at his brother’s tone and then shook his head, “she probably thinks you’re leading her on then”
Jayden was shocked at the suggestion and rubbed a hand over his neck in thought before sighing, “look Blake I appreciate your “help” but I’m not interested, Mel is only my friend and you know it”
Blake nodded for his bothers sake only now he wasn’t so sure.
“Then you won’t mind coming on a double date with me and Mia and Mia’s sister Sierra?” he said arching an eyebrow in question.
Jayden cast a subtle glance up at Melody and then looked at his brother and sighed, “Fine…hey look I got a lot of research to do for a term paper in English so I’m gonna split, but will you finish walking Mel home for me?”
Blake nodded; he wouldn’t mind taking Melody home in the slightest.
“No problem, good luck studying” he said as his brother expressed his thanks, said bye to Melody and then walked across the street to the library.
Blake strode ahead to Melody and smiled, “hey Mel,”
Melody glanced over at Blake and smiled softly back, “hey…you don’t have to walk me home…I’ll be fine”
Blake chuckled,
“you think I HAVE to walk you home?” he shook his head. “I don’t mind at all…you know you’re always around the house but I don’t really know you at all I thought we could talk is all”
Melody was surprised by his words and a soft rosy blush tinted her cheeks as she murmured a small, “oh, ok”
Blake smiled, “has anyone ever told you that you have a pretty blush Mel?”
Melody bit her lower lip and shook her head. “Jayden’s teased me about it a couple times but he’s my best friend of course he’d say something like that…”
Blake noticed she looked like she was about to say something else but decided against it so he spoke up in her silence, “and you think I’m your best friend’s brother so I’m “supposed” to say similar things to make you feel good?”
Melody turned to look at him and then slowly nodded with embarrassment before she quickened her pace.
Blake grabbed her arm and softly turned her to face him, “Mel you are a beautiful girl, why won’t you see compliments for what they really are?”
Tears leapt to Melody’s eyes which she quickly hid and sighed; she wasn’t going to tell him about her parents and how they constantly told her she was their mistake child, that she was worthless and they wish she had died in childbirth or that they regretted not having an abortion…that most the abuse she endured was verbal from her own parents. If her parents couldn’t stand her and didn’t love her how could anyone else? No, this was definitely not information she would divulge to anyone not even Jayden’s drop dead gorgeous brother so she merely shrugged and managed a whispered, “I don’t know” even though from the look in his eyes she knew Blake wasn’t buying it.
‘That’s his problem’ she thought and turned away from him again.
Blake raked a hand back through his hair as he watched her walk quickly away from him up ahead, he sighed heavily and quickened his steps to catch up with her although he let the subject fall. He didn’t want to pressure her into talking to him. Oddly, he wanted her to be comfortable talking to him,
‘the way she does with Jayden’ he thought.
The rest of the walk was silent between them until they came to her house. Melody was about to go inside when she heard an
“umm, Mel?”
She turned to see Blake rubbing his neck in thought as he glanced up at her.
“Yeah?” she replied quirking an eyebrow in question.
“Listen Jay and I are going to the beach tomorrow morning and will probably spend the day there…I was wondering if you would want to come with us?”
Melody bit her lower lip and shook her head, “thanks for the offer Blake but I got a lot of homework to do I…”
Blake sighed, “It’ll still be there for you when you get back Mel…just come with us”
When Melody started to argue Blake dropped to his knees and stuck out his lower lip in his best pouting face, “please?”
Melody thought he looked so cute and giggled at his antics, smiling down at him,
“fine, but if I don’t pass the test on Monday…” she waggled her finger at him, “there’ll be hell to pay”
Blake laughed and rose to his feet,
“it’s a deal” he said and then took her hand and placed a soft kiss to her wrist causing a pleasant tingle to run down her arm,
“until tomorrow Madame” he said with a soft smile, bowing low, before he turned and headed towards home; anxiously awaiting the beach trip for the following day.
The following morning Jayden woke up with a splitting headache and ended up losing the previous nights dinner; he cursed angrily as he fell back into bed pressing his fingers against his temples which throbbed mercilessly.
“Jayden come on we have to-”
Blake peered into his brother’s room and stopped short at seeing his brother lying in bed emitting a low groan as he rubbed his temples.
“Go” he finished more quietly and stepped into the room. “What’s wrong man?”
Jayden glanced up and scowled,
“I have a killer headache that’s what” he bit out through gritted teeth against the pain.
“So you’re not coming with us?”
Jayden shook his head,
“I can’t, I got a lot of homework and I don’t feel good at all…maybe we could go tomorrow morning or something if I feel better?” he said trying to find an alternative; for some reason he didn’t like the thought of his brother going anywhere alone with Melody…especially knowing she used to have a crush on his brother.
Blake shook his head, “I work all day tomorrow and plus I had to beg Melody for like 15 minutes yesterday just so she’d agree to coming I’d feel bad telling her I have to cancel now”
Jayden nodded and sighed heavily, “okay well give her a hug and tell her sorry for me then I guess”
Blake nodded, “Will do” he said as he turned and headed out of his brothers room,
“have fun” he heard his brother say just as he closed the door.
‘Oh I think we most definitely will’ he thought before packing up the car and driving over to pick up Melody who was out front waiting for him.
He saw her already thin smile fade when she saw it was just him.
“Where’s Jayden?” she asked quietly.
Blake felt a little disappointment at her reaction but managed a smile over at her, “he woke up with a bad headache this morning but he told me to tell you sorry and give you this” he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her in a gentle hug.
Melody was stiff in his arms but slowly relaxed as she breathed in his scent and knew Jayden had probably asked him to do so for him.
Blake pulled back from her and smiled before he took her things from her and started loading them in his car.
“Blake I don’t think it’s a good idea…maybe I should just do my homework too I-” she began to argue but Blake cut her off.
“Listen Jayden says its okay if we go plus I just want you to have a good time and if you don’t have fun then I won’t ask you for anything ever again”
Melody smiled and finally agreed,
“Ok fine” she murmured as she climbed into his car hesitantly and buckled up.
Blake could sense how nervous she was at being alone with him so he tried everything he could to lighten the mood for her and by the time they arrived at the back about 45 minutes later she was talking with him and had even smiled a few times or teased him about something he said.
‘This is going to be fun’ he thought with a smile; hoping to give her a time to remember…one spent just with him.
Melody sat on her towel watching Blake surf from a distance. He had wanted to teach her how but she had said no but she would watch him. She watched now as he strode towards her and shook out his midnight black hair, wet and hanging into his face; she realized what a perfect body he had and forced herself to look away and focused on the surf crashing up onto shore.
“You’re getting burned” Blake said laying down his surf board and toweling off a few feet from her.
“I put sunscreen on”
“It probably washed off that two minute swim you took” he said grinning.
Two minutes in the cold ocean water was all it had taken for her to realize she preferred toasting on the sand just watching him.
“You need another basting” Blake teased eliciting a low giggle from Melody who reached for the lotion but not before Blake grabbed it.
Squirting some into his palm, he rubbed his hands together and hunkered down behind her. The Scent of coconut and tropics filled her senses as he rubbed the lotion into her skin.
“Where’s your hat?” he asked, his strong fingers kneading into her shoulders.
“I left it in the car I think”
“Deliberate disobedience” he teased as he unwrapped the towel he had put around his neck and covered her head with it.
“I don’t want you getting sunstroke the first time you come to the beach with me”
Laughing softly she folded the towel up so she could see, “you’re worse then Jayden, Blake”
He flipped her hair over her right shoulders so he could continue rubbing the lotion into her back and shoulders.
“Are you enjoying yourself?” he asked more softly.
Melody smiled, “its nice thanks”
His hands slowed. She felt his hands moving up her spine moving more gently. He gripped her shoulders gently,
“It’s good to see you smile and mean it” he said.
Releasing her he straightened. Melody had surprised herself with how calm she had acted and appeared even though inside a swarm of butterflies flitted nervously and a shiver ran down her spine. His hands had felt so strong and yet gentle as he had kneaded the lotion in for her; watching out for her. She felt a twinge of jealousy wondering if he was the same way with Mia and she couldn’t help but long for a man like Blake. Blake returned a few minutes later and removed the towel from her head and placed her hat in its place. He sat down beside her and smiled over at her as he opened a lunch basket and handed her a coke and a plate of fried chicken and potato wedges. She looked up at Blake surprised and he chuckled,
“Jayden told me its one of your favorites” he said with a wink before digging into his own food.
Melody looked at him surprised again by his gentleness before she shook her head and started to eat. Blake watched her out of the corner of his eye. Her motions were slow any lazy like as she ate and stared off into space completely lost in her own thoughts. He smiled and let his eyes run down over her. She was a very pretty girl. It had taken him forever to get her to strip down to her bikini so she wouldn’t roast and she would get in the water but in the end he almost wished she hadn’t because he didn’t want to be caught staring at her. she wasn’t overly busty but she had curves in the right places, she had an athletically trim body and her skin was tan,
‘and smooth’ he thought as his mind returned to just moments before when he rubbed the lotion into her skin which had been soft and warm to the touch.
He knew it was because of the sun but he couldn’t help but wish for a second that it had been because of him before he quickly brushed aside the thought when he wondered what Jayden or even Mia would think about that kind of thought towards Melody.
‘Oh shit! Mia?!’ he thought.
She hadn’t even crossed his mind the entire time he had been with Melody. He almost felt like he was betraying Mia with such thoughts but soon he managed to have pushed both thoughts aside for the time being. After they had eaten Blake rose and offered Melody a hand up.
“I have one more surprise for you” he said smiling.
Melody looked up at him wondering what he was talking about as she followed him from the beach down to the rentals.
“My brother told me you always wanted to ride a wave runner so what better day then today right?” he said as he paid the man for a rental.
Melody gaped at him and watched him as he climbed onto the wave runner and turned to look at her.
“Your chariot awaits my lady” he teased, holding out a hand for her to help her on. Melody didn’t say anything as she climbed on behind him.
“Wrap your arms around my waist,” Blake told her.
Melody hesitantly wrapped her arms around his bare torso lightly, feeling embarrassed to do so. Blake smiled, sensitive to her awkward feelings as he took her arms and wrapped them tighter around him.
“You’re going to have to hold on tighter than that if you’re going to stay with me” he teased to lighten the mood.
Melody nodded, noticing how smooth his skin was and how built he really was. She could feel the muscles in his bare torso and for a minute she nearly ran her hands over his hard chest before blushing at her thoughts.
“Ready?” he asked her.
Melody nodded; “ready as I’ll ever be”
Blake chuckled and revved the Sea-Doo to life. She tightened her hold on him as the Sea-Doo skimmed over the water.
Blake laughed and brought a hand down to rest on her hands around him,
“you okay back there?!” he asked.
Melody nodded and soon she found herself laughing as they glided along and Blake made a sharp turn causing the water to spray up at them. Blake felt a shiver run down his spine at the sound of her laughter and her cool hands resting around his bare skin. He stopped the Sea-Doo and slowly ran his hands over her own which were wrapped more loosely around him.
“You want to drive Mel?” he asked softly.
“Seriously?” she asked.
Blake nodded, “the reigns are yours if you want them”
Melody nodded excitedly, “sure!”
Blake chuckled and helped her trade places with him. He explained what to do briefly before wrapping his arms around her waist as she sped them off further out into the ocean giggling a bit as she did so. Blake found he loved her laugh and as he listened to her his thumbs idly began stroking the soft skin on her stomach. Melody stopped laughing for a moment as his hands left tingles where they were idly stroking her skin and a tiny shiver spread through her. Her head cocked to the side a bit as she lost herself in thought and the feel of his hands while she was driving and Blake found he wanted to press his lips to the graceful curve of her neck. He pressed the thoughts away feeling guilty and just held her as she took them for a ride and about half an hour later Blake switched places with her again to take them back to dock. During the ride back Melody rested her cheek against Blake’s back and closed her eyes as she hugged herself to him; enjoying the feeling of just gliding over the water.
Blake took her out to ice cream after they left the beach so he could spend more time with her before he took her home. He could see why his brother really liked her. She was so fun, easy going and innocent. He definitely wanted to spend more time with her. Melody fell asleep on the way back to her house and Blake smiled over at her. She was so shy he found it adorable; While Mia threw herself at him and worse sometimes less than concealing clothing recently whereas Melody was so soft spoken and innocent and beautiful yet she didn’t seem to know it and damn how he wanted her to. he kept throwing glances over at her throughout the drive home and as he did so he thought of their day together particularly the closeness he had felt with her on the wave runner and the way it had felt. A small smile tilted his lips before he reminded himself he was taken and she and his brother were really close and his brother probably really liked her but wouldn’t admit it. he sighed and pulled up to her house.
Brushing her hair back from her face Blake tucked it gently behind her ear and rested a hand on her shoulder,
“Hey Mel, you’re home” he whispered softly.
Melody moaned as she stretched and accidentally hit Blake in the eye which caused her to quickly wake up.
“Oh my god Blake I’m sorry” she said, her hand touching the hand he had over his eye.
Blake chuckled,
“it’s okay Mel,” he said soothingly when he saw her worry and embarrassment.
“I’m so sorry Blake…I didn’t mean to” she said averting her gaze feeling bad. “How bad is it I didn’t scratch you did I?”
Blake chuckled, “Mel its okay, nothing a little kiss won’t clear up” he teased. ‘now that’s not a bad idea’ he thought but refused to let her see he could very easily mean it.
Mel glanced up shocked and then smiled when she realized he was just teasing her.
“Oh shut up or I’ll hit you for real” she teased.
Blake chuckled and was glad to see her coming out of her shell with him.
“Thanks for coming with me today Mel, I had fun”
Melody smiled and nodded, “me too, thanks I owe you one”
Blake shook his head; “no I enjoyed myself it was my pleasure”
Melody gave a soft smile and tried to withhold a yawn but failed.
Blake smiled at her and touched her shoulder lightly, “Go to bed Mel, you’ve had a long day”
Melody smiled, “yea but I had fun thanks a lot,”
“Anytime” he said and watched her as she climbed out of the car,
“tell your brother I hope he feels better and give him a hug back for me” she said and then went inside the house.
Blake smiled and drove off towards home; wishing the day had not ended.
