A fate worse than death? You decide.

The beat of the slow, pounding rhythm surged through my body, creating a maelstrom of emotion I had never wanted to feel again.

Rejection, hope, betrayal, bleak writhing anger.

Each tore through me, magnified by the words that spilled from my lips, causing those watching, listening, to feel the same.

Through a haze of chilling silver mist, I saw their reactions. Some had tears running down their cheeks, unnoticed, unchecked. Some stared with horrified pity. Others still stood with hands clutched to their chests, looking for all the world like their hearts were breaking.

Which could very well be true, for some. It was why those with heart conditions were strictly advised against attending.

The words, the mood. They changed subtly as the song slipped seamlessly into a new one.

A new, nervous hope. A silent bond. Something so deep, so profound, that it couldn’t be described in words alone.

Tears were dried, breaking hearts soothed.

There would be no deaths this night, for my prey had withstood the call. But not for long. They would come soon, their resistance broken down, battered by the strength of my resolve.

I would have my retribution.

They will pay.
