Ch 1
It was a rainy, cold Monday morning in London. Everyone in the square
outside the palace was walking around with posh dresses and nice suites.
Everyone was all bundled up trying to keep warm, and was walking around
with someone, everyone but Charlie.
Charlie was a street urchin, or as everyone else knew him as a
nuisance. He had no one to turn to, nowhere to go. The only friends he
had were the pigeons in the park, minding their own business. He always
wondered why they flew away once he came near them. He was walking around
trying to keep warm and hoping to find a place to sleep. He would take any
place; it didn't matter where he slept he just cared that he wouldn't be
out in the open so no one could see him.
Charlie was wearing an old brown suit coat (which was to big for
him), old black jean pants that had a lot of holes in the knees and a hat
that in a way matched his coat, that sat upon his dirty brown hair. It
seemed like the more he thought about being warm, the colder he got.
Charlie turned a corner and saw an old man wearing a black overcoat
and a black hat. It seemed like he was selling a special kind of bread
because it smelled really good to Charlie, he also hadn't eaten in about
two days.
"Could you spare a corner of bread sir?" Asked Charlie pleadingly.
"Oh I'm sorry lad, it's against the law."
" you anyway." And Charlie stalked away. Back to trying to
find a place to sleep and something to eat.
"Hey it's you!" Yelled a female voice. "What are you doing out of
the palace?"
Charlie didn't know who the voice was talking to until the girl hopped in
front of him.
"What are you talking about?" Asked Charlie, confused.
"Why are you out in the cold?" I'm sure it's nice and warm in the
palace." She pointed to the palace.
"Yeah I'm sure it is, but I wouldn't know I've never been in there.
I don't think I would want to be in there anyway. I bet you that the king
and queen are stuck up and daft. I bet they couldn't live without their
precious money."
"What are you talking about you've never been in the palace? Of
course you have. You have lived there all your life! Lets go. I'll show
you."
Charlie didn't know what to think, what to say or even what to do. She he
follow this girl or should he stay? Dazed and confused Charlie followed.
*Why does she think I'm one of them?* Charlie thought. *I've never even
seen the palace up close.*
It took about ten minutes to get to the palace. The guards thought
twice if they should let Charlie in through the gate. They had a huge
black hat on, red jackets and black pants. The palace looked amazing up
close, Charlie couldn't believe his eyes. It was a huge towering
building, magnificent in it's splendor, elegant and ancient.
It spoke of decades of wisdom. It was a tan/white color with big tan
poles at the door. Before he knew it, they were in the front room of the
palace. He saw pictures scaling the walls, really nice furniture and
some stairs leading up to the higher level.
"Look," said the girl who called herself Paige pointing to a picture.
Charlie wasn't ready for what he saw. He saw himself in the picture. He
had no words he was speechless.
" is that?" he stammered.
"Why it's you silly." She said while laughing.
"You gotta be crazy kidding me!"
"Whom are you talking to in there Paige?" yelled this old raspy
voice.
"I'm talking to Thomas of course."
"Thomas?" Asked Charlie. "My name is not Thomas, it's Charlie."
All of a sudden the old raspy voice showed himself.
"Oh Charlie my good by, why don't you go up to your room and get
ready for supper?"
The old man must have seen the confusion on Charlie's face, because he put
a concerned look on his face and asked, "Would you like some Adam's ale?"
Charlie didn't answer. He just stayed there confused. Did this old man
believe him? Or did he think Charlie was crazy? He didn't care, Charlie
just wanted a place to sleep and some food and it seemed like he was going
to get what he wanted.
"I know this is going to sound silly is my room?"
All the old man and Paige could do was laugh.
*I guess I can just go try to find by opening every door and see what
room looks like someone my age would live in.* Charlie came to a door, it
looked smaller than the others so he tried that one first. He never
thought he would see what he saw when he opened the door. He saw a boy who
looked exactly like him only he was clean. He was lying on the bed reading
a book, the boy on the bed looked up and Charlie and the boy started
screaming at the same time. Within the next ten seconds the old man and
Paige came running up the stairs.
"What is it? What's the matter?" Asked Paige while she was out of
breath. She was wide eyed when she saw what was in the room.
"Oh it can't be the twin, Charlie. I heard you moved to America!
How did you get here?" Asked the old man.
"She brought me here." Said Charlie pointing to Paige.
"Wait I have a twin?" Asked the boy known as Thomas.
"Yes we had to get rid of one of you because if we had two princes at
the same time, we would get too much publicity." Said the old man. "Now
that you guys have seen each other, I guess the only thing I can say is
'you need a place to stay?'"
