In Vain
Venetian heart of glass you close to me
As with false smiles you open up your arms;
I blind my eyes, embrace uncertainty
Succumbing to the pleasure of your charms
No rose to me would ever smell as sweet
As dreams of you and I in love’s embrace;
Yet when at last in passion our lips meet,
The taste is bitter, hollow as your grace
As bees and flies to honey sweet are drawn
So I in numb precision follow you;
I self-destruct, identity forgone
Trapped in a land where only lies are true.
One day when the wisteria have fled
Perhaps you’ll notice all the tears I’ve bled.
