Stalker: Chapter 1

Even though it seems like it took place eons ago, it all happened when I was fourteen, just two years back. My friends and I were a tightly knit group who were just your average mischief-makers. We were the group that was always disrupting the class by our hyena like laughter that seemed to be uncontrollable.

Altogether there were six of us. Janet the giggly blonde who would laugh at anything; Lee, Janet’s best friend who was the mastermind of all their wacky programs; Malachi the thoughtful bookworm who thought that this was the perfect entertainment for us; William the prissy snob who was just as giggly as Janet; Gabe, my best friend, who was game to all of Lee’s ideas and me, Rufus, the control freak, red head who has always wanted to stay away from trouble but my friends pull me in their mindless games regardless. It’s truly tragic the bonds of friendship could not last with time.

After the incident, as we put it, we began to grow apart. Janet joined the snobby rich girls group who welcomed her with open arms. Lee became a hapless trouble maker who joined the bullies. William became more of a priss with his prissy friends and incidentally enough started dating Janet. Malachi still remains a good friend but he prefers his reading to humans any day and well, Gabe and I are still joined like peas in a pod.

Staring at him was a silly little game we used to play. He was the star of the school, the prince charming for many girls. I shared almost no classes with him so I had no idea what he was like and knew only what the girls were always twittering about.

I’m clueless to why his popularity rose to such a fanatical level that spring. Even before he blossomed into whatever he had turned into, he had still been very popular. During the winter vacations he really, really grew up and the final product made every one fall in love with him.  Every one seemed to be talking about him. Even my friends seemed content with spending lunch staring at him. Truth be told, even I couldn’t help giving him an occasional peek. To everyone he was like god. He just seemed so perfect and absolutely untouchable. He had no enemies except for the occasional envious lot.

Everyone’s obsessions seemed quite funny and nobody took notice until Ethan began showing signs of the pressure he felt by his molesting fans. Rumors were that people had been sending him letters telling him that they loved him and that they were watching his every move. And I was obviously the last person to know that this prank was being pulled of by my own friends.

“Oh he’ll find out, and then his friends are going to kill us.” I would mutter to myself for the billionth time, as I gave a furtive glance at Ethan and the jocks surrounding him; trying to make a protective cocoon.

“Oh, oh, oh I know what we’ll do next.” Lee shouted out with the same enthusiasm as eureka had probably been cried out at the latest discovery.

“We’ll hack his computer account to go inside his computer project.”

Malachi gasped, “That’s terrible…. But why would you do that anyway.”

“To write him a note, silly, the security, prepared by his friends, around his locker is so tight that even my devious tricks, to send him a note, can’t slip past them.”

Frustrated at Lee’s incessant attempts at annoying Ethan, I finally asked what was wrong with us.

“Wrong… well I seriously don’t know what’s happened to us but I am sure Lee knows what’s going on since he’s the one who started it.” Malachi answered rather bemused.

And we all pointedly looked at Lee who was fiddling away with the computer. He suddenly realized we were all staring.

“What?” he shrugged his shoulders, “I just felt bored and Ethan’s such an easy target and it painfully delightful to see Mr. Macho getting all flustered from the unwanted attention.”

“Are you sure you’re not hiding some deep dark secrets from us that have something to with closets and such hmmm,” Janet asked scathingly.

Lee just gave her the finger and we all giggled like immature 2 year olds.

Our plan or lets just say Lee’s plan to hack the computer system and get into Ethan’s computer project had been successful. The admittedly expertly produced project now included a certain note that would pop open after a few minutes of pressing the start button.

Lee and Janet gleefully rubbed their hands in anticipation while Gabe pretended he couldn’t care less and I wished with all my heart that I wasn’t there at all. It was just some sort of empathy thing that I just can’t see people getting humiliated, especially Ethan, who always looked so woefully heartbroken after such an incident would befall him.

All of us sat in the computer hall and were waiting for the rest of the class to file in. I painfully squirmed in my seat as Ethan walked past us. I searched his face for ANY signs that would suggest that he had a hint about what was going to happen. At that very moment his gorgeous eyes turned my way. I simply forgot how to breathe as those eyes drowned me into them. I felt my face going red and feeling painfully shy I looked away. From my peripheral view I saw Ethan sit down in the first row next to one of his jock friends. I grabbed onto Gabe’s shirt.

“What the hell are you doing?” Gabe yelped. Ethan stared back at us and I felt myself hunch down praying I looked inconspicuous.

“He knows!” I growled keeping my voice as low as possible. Gabe just raised his eyebrow and continued to stare at the girl sitting a few seats away. I sighed and willed my cheeks to regain their normal hue.

The amiable looking teacher, pleased that the class had assembled so quickly, got up and began lecturing us on how important our projects were to the term grades. She had to stop Lee and Janet from their chit chat and then told them that that she would randomly begin calling up the students to give their project presentation.

I gave my presentation as confidently as I could but mostly I fumbled around. When it ended I gave my teacher a nervous smile and she grinned back encouragingly. I was feeling elated that the whole ordeal was finished when my eyes suddenly met the ones I had been avoiding during the whole presentation.

They were there once again probing into my eyes searching through my soul. I squeezed my eyes shut. I simply couldn’t stand their intensity.

Suddenly the teacher announced that there would be a break and the rest of students will be graded after it. I stared around, astonished, wondering how half of the students had already given their presentations. I looked at Malachi who was nodding for me to come towards him.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, a little surprised that he wanted to talk to me like this.

He gave a slight glance in Ethan’s direction. “He was looking at you.” He spoke rather quietly and expressionlessly.

My eyes widened, “You noticed.”

“Of course I did, it was rather obvious.”

I gave my patented blush. “Do you think he knows?”

“I doubt that’s what the matter is.”

Before he could say more all my friends joined us and they simply could not contain their excitement and I couldn’t say more.
