I was lost, and I knew it. After running frantically through the woods for hours on end, I was near complete exhaustion. But I ignored the fatigue and pressed onward with out receding my steady pace. I blundered past trees, and tripped over boulders that seemed determined to bring me to the ground. And suddenly, I was flying. I was running and then the ground wasn't there anymore. It felt wonderful, until I realized that I had stepped over the edge of some precipice and was falling to the ground.
"Well, I thought, it's better to die this way than be executed in front of a crowd."
I felt myself falling, the wind whistling in my ears. I didn't know how to stop myself, until I flipped my feet toward the ground. I stopped abruptly, in the air. I stared at the phenomenon that had just occurred.
"Whoa. Didn't know that I could do that."
The ground was within a few feet, so I just jumped down, or I tried to. But it had no affect.
"Now what?" I asked a loud.
I struggled in the air, awarded only with making myself more tired than I already was.
"Damn." I muttered under my breath. I kicked my legs and gave up. I sighed wearily. What if I was stuck here until I died? I decided to try giving commands. Nothing like this had happened before, but there had been other odd occurrences.
"Put me down." I commanded with patience. There was no affect on my current predicament.
"DROP ME, YOU UNSEEN FORCE OF HADES!" I shouted at it.
My anger was over flowing and I had a longing to touch the ground again. The force let go of me and I fell to the forest floor with a thud. I tried to rise, but found that I couldn't, since I was so exhausted. I just stayed where I was and fell to dosing. I slept the night where I was and woke before dawn. I rolled over and stared at the sky. It was a beautiful day, but I failed to notice that. I need to put more distance in between the castle and myself. They would begin looking for me soon, when they realized that their peasant slave had run off. I was a wanted woman. They would have killed me if I hadn't escaped from their disgusting dungeons. I was merely a wanderer who had come to live in their village. Someone had been spreading rumors that I was a gang member and a thief and a liar. And I had had the classic go to trial, be tortured until I admitted, stayed in the dungeon, be fed soup swarming with bugs. What had angered the king and his court most was that I hadn't admitted to being everything that they said in that city. I used to be everything they said I was, and maybe even a little more. There hadn't been any familiar faces that I saw. I had been planning to start a crime free life in a new kingdom, but that childish fantasy had failed.
Walking through the wood, I think, so you know who I am?
Ah yes, and then again you aren't real. You are only the person listening inside my head and lending an ear to hear what I have to say. Who am I? I 'm River. Yes I know, River. What kind of name is that? Don't bother asking because I myself do not know. I have never known any relatives whatsoever. Ever since I escaped the clutches of the insane King Anthony two days ago, I have been on the run. They could catch me, but I won't let them. I have some of my own tricks up my sleeve, but I'll have to go back to my old way of living to out wit them, out wit them all.
