Prologue

You can call me Arina. I am a maki. A natural maki. The maki are a race of beings. You become a maki when you die young, excluding suicide or death row. You are a natural maki if you are born on this world. Natural maki are treated as royalty by most people because we are so few.
Earth has some things we don't, like plastic, cars and alcohol. We have things that are few on Earth, like plenty of food, clean air and water, and good soil. We call this place Octavia. I live in the state Burgayia, in the capital Lepola.
I am the daughter of the Queen Mother, who is in charge of all the maki. I have two sisters who could be Queen Mother besides me. I hope I am picked. It is a great honor and with it comes the knowlegde of all the Queen Mothers before them.
