The alarm rang out loud and clear. I jumped awake like any typical morning. But, today was not a typical morning. I had to get up an hour earlier. I rolled out of bed and headed for the bathroom. As I looked in the mirror I let out a large yawn. 'To early, to early!' was all I could think of. I got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. My backpack weighed a ton and I could hardly keep my eyes open. I had crammed all last night for the History test I had to finish. That's why I was going in early. I at breakfast in a hurry. When my dad came downstairs I picked up my backpack and we left. The whole way to school we sat in silence except, for the few bad jokes that came out of my father's mouth. When we arrived my dad said "Goodbye Carmen".
"Bye," I replied.I started to walk upstairs to my locker like normal but on my way I herd something crying. To my left was a baby in a bundle sitting on the stairs. I was baffled. 'Why is that baby there?' I wondered.
I looked all around but no one was in sight. I went over to the baby and just stared at it. Then it started to cry even louder so I picked it up. I rocked it in my arms and it stopped crying. I looked at it and noticed it was one of the cutest children I had ever seen. The baby had big green eyes that looked fake but had to be real because they shown up at me. It started to close its eyes as I smoothed the wet hair out of its face. Its cheeks were flushed from crying and it had just the right amount of baby fat to be cute but not overly chubby. It had the small fingers that clutched the blanket around it. It had beautiful golden curls that where wet from crying. I walked down the stairs and up to the front desk and I stopped in front of the secretary. "I found this baby on the stairs. What should I do?" I asked, I thought I must have look really stupid.
"Very funny now please leave me alone I have a lot of work to do," She replied. She had a stalk of papers in front of her. I noticed the one on the very top. It said "How to Care for Children Under One Year" but, when I looked closer the title vanished and was replaced by "Teacher's Supply List". I blinked and looked back at the Secretary.
"But, what should I do! I have this baby I cant take care of it," I exclaimed.
"You don't have a baby. Stop fooling around and leave me alone unless you want a Saturday," She said. I figure talking to her was hopeless but I was confused. Why did she refuse to help me? So I went to the nurse's office. She was sitting at her desk when I walked in. "Yes can I help you," she asked.
"The lady at the front desk wouldn't help me so I came here," I said, rocking the baby back and forth to help it fall asleep, "I found this kid on the steps and I don't know what to do with it." I held the baby up for her to see.
"What are you talking about? You aren't holding a baby. Stop joking around and leave please."
"I DO HAVE A BABY! ITS IN MY ARMS," I replied holding the baby up right in front of the nurse, "WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH IT?"
"Please stop yelling you don't have a baby so please leave."
"Fine! I'm going to put it on that bed over there and when you finally decide to take care of it you'll be able to!" With that I put the baby on the bed and left to go to my locker. I was mad the whole time I took my History test and I probably failed it.
For the rest of the morning I was puzzled. Why didn't the Nurse and Secretary want to help me? At lunch I told my friends. "Today I was going to my locker and I found this baby on the steps. It was really cute; it had green eyes and blonde hair. Anyway, I took it to the front desk and the lady didn't even believe me. It was like she was denying the fact that I had found a baby. Then I went to the nurse and she did the same thing!" I paused to get their reactions.
"Oh my GOD. Carmen are you joking? You have to be," replied Katie laughing a little bit.
"What? How could there be a baby on the steps? And how could the secretary and nurse not even notice it?" asked Rebecca.
"Carmen stop joking around," said Tina.
"I'm not joking! I'm serious! I left the baby in the nurse's office we can go see it right now," I replied. I stood up and walked towards the nurse's office with my friends in tow.
When I got into the hallway near the office I heard this loud wailing. "It must me the baby," I said.
"What are you talking about?" Tina asked.
"The crying," I replied hurrying into the nurse's office. My friends looked at each other with the same thought written across their faces, "Is she going crazy?".
