Jason was dragging his feet as we walked up to the studio. “Julia, come on. Let’s go home.”
“This is something that I have to do. You don’t have to talk. I just need you to watch Sapphire, okay?” I told him, pulling Sapphire along.
We were met inside by some guy named Ben, who directed me into a dark room. Jason stayed in the waiting room with Sapphire.
Ben asked me to sit in a comfortable chair, and a few stylists fussed with my hair and makeup. Someone then told me to talk about Sweet Eternity and our friendships and everything that had happened. That’s exactly what I did. I said almost everything that I have written on these pages. After hours of talking, they asked me some more specific questions and asked me to comment on some videos from when we used to be so young and innocent, from when we used to be friends.
I had no clue how long it had been by the time I left the room. I was on the verge of tears as I walked out to where Jason was playing with Sapphire. As I walked in, I saw someone walking in from the other side of the room. She was unmistakable. The same long black hair and brown eyes and pretty face that I had gazed at lovingly for years. The face that was plastered on magazine covers and TV screens and posters in every home in Hunter, Pennsylvania. Jessica Amelia Prentice.
Jessica stopped short when she saw Jason. She looked at him, then at Sapphire. I could see her mind working, see her imagine that Sapphire was Jason’s daughter. She walked straight over to them before kneeling down in front of my daughter.
“Hi there,” Jessica said in the voice that she reserved for little kids. “I’m Jessica.”
“I’m Sapphire,” Sapphire responded.
“Who are you here with?”
“My Mommy and my Uncle Jason.”
That was when Jessica looked up and saw me. I could see tears growing in her eyes as she stood up and spoke to me. “Your daughter is beautiful.”
I wasn’t sure what to say. I knew that she wasn’t, either. I opened my mouth and closed it again quickly.
“I’m glad that you came. The story wouldn’t be complete without you, Julia Logrunner.”
My name had been the last two words I had said to Jessica. It felt so strange to see her mouth form them underneath her teary eyes. “It can never be complete,” I said. “Not without Lavi.”
She reached out to hug me, and I hugged her back. “I never realized how much I missed you until right now.”
“I think I always knew,” I replied. “I just wasn’t ready to admit it.”
I felt her tears dripping onto me and mine dripping onto her, and I knew that the eternity of sadness and hate between us had come to an end.
