Open Shadow

On a day you were unhappy

On a day the sun was shining

You looked down and saw your shadow

Saw the darkened doors...

Staring darkness down,

You saw shade give depth to level ground,

Before your feet, a trapdoor, an escape hatch,

Opening a frown.

You were seeking

An answer

To sunlight and misery

which slipped past you, evasive and unreal...

Trying to fight darkness

Without touching it.

Looking for a meaning to command -

And your shadow said: I have never left your hand.

Offering perspective

Offering

a lost part of you

to make a whole;

Requiring

that you acknowledge

a world with night.

On a day you were unhappy

On a day the sun was shining

You looked down and saw your shadow

Saw the opened doors...
