Seven Years Alone
by Cora Windover

based on the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

*~*~*~*

This scarlet mark for all to see
Has stolen my integrity
But it has made me stronger, too
At least the people know the truth

But you, my friend, must stand alone
And face the demons on your own
By day, a preacher sworn to god
By night, a sinner holding on

Why should I ask questions after seven years alone?
Been living for the little child who made this place a home
Reach and touch my hand, love, reach through all the pain
Seven years have passed us by, but some things never change

Our daughter laughs and twirls and spins
She smiles with an elvish grin
So beautiful, my one last tie
That's kept my life from passing by

And if I have just one regret
It isn't what you might expect
I wish that seven years ago
We'd had the thought to leave and go

Why should I ask questions after seven years alone?
Been living for the little child who made this place a home
Reach and touch my hand, love, reach through all the pain
Seven years have passed us by, but some things never change

Like love, like trust, like scarlet A
These parts of me will never change
And one day soon we'll all be free
Together for eternity

Why should I ask questions after seven years alone?
Been living for the little child who made this place a home
Reach and touch my hand, love, reach through all the pain
Seven years have passed us by, but some things never change
Seven years have passed us by, but some things never change
